Younger style clothes for taller kids!

If you have a child who is very tall for their age, where do you find age appropriate clothing? The girls styles seems to change massively after the young and cute stuff sold up to age 7-8 whereas the clothes for 8-9 year olds seem very obviously geared towards tweens.

DGD is only just 6 and it’s suddenly becoming very hard to get the right balance- she still wants sparkles and unicorns, not crop tops and mini adult clothes!

DGS is 11 and some of his best fitting clothes are now XS mens, he’s super slim and many of the 13-15 aged clothes (needed for length) are way too loose, or in dull adult colours

Any links or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Oh I feel you with this OP. My 6 year old is in 8-9 clothes because she is so tall and it’s a struggle to find anything that isn’t cropped!

I’ve given up on Zara completely, usually find the odd pieces in H&M or the supermarkets. Have you tried there?

I found sainsbury was fine for girls clothes until they hit 12 years in clothes then m and s or h amd m seem good. If you have a bigger budget then john lewis and boden tend to style younger.

I had this issue when DD1 was younger. Sainsburys was good from memory. She’s 10 now and wants to wear the cropped tops.

Joules and boden have a younger feel to their clothing in older sizes - up to 14yrs I think. Maybe worth looking at frugi? Those are more expensive options though (but not so bad in the sales). H&M you can sometimes find some good "young" bits in slightly bigger sizes, and sometime also M&S... and as PP says, supermarkets are often not bad either.

I have this with DS, scandi/Dutch brands are taller lindex, polarn o pyret, maxamorra, wheat. Boden (in the sale) seems cut slimmer so can size up, joules is similar, some stuff in h&m basic jeans, tops etc
Forget next their clothes are so wide!

Unicorn top

A Quick Look on H&M and I’ve found a unicorn top in the bigger sizes, I still isn’t something I like but just showing there are some options

It's hard! Land's End occasionally have some nice things on sale. Next usually have at least a few things but you have to trawl their website to find it. They do plain trousers/leggings in longer length, you could use iron on patches to add some glitter. Very much depends on the luck of the season.
H&M and M&S.

If you search for a specific film/series you can often find adult clothing e.g. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pokemon

NotARealWookiie · 02/11/2024 06:46

I generally found M&S had some younger style bits and their sizes are more generous. Also tu.

Monsoon, H&M, TU Sainsbury’s, Boden, Joules and John Lewis. All do ‘younger’ style clothing in older sizes. Next also do regular and long in some basic leggings.

Beautiful sparkly unicorn dress up to age 12-13 from Monsoon - currently 20% off too.

Thanks for sharing your helpful suggestions, will check them out. Have tried most of the supermarket brands and high street eg Next, H&M. Tu do their older boys and any XS men's stuff online only when I asked recently 😬

Very heavily focused on Christmas styles just at the moment but Dunnes Stores does girls clothes of the same style from 2 up to age 14.

The spring collection is usually very strong.

Kite clothing do girl and boy clothes in the same style from 2 to 13 and are having a sale at the moment. The outlet is good too. Lovely bright colours and nice fabrics.

Next goes up to age 15-16 which is equivalent to women's size 10. Plenty of jeans (we found them too skinny on the thighs as DD plays rugby but plenty of tops and plain t-shirts available)

Clothes from the 'Blue section' (never called it girls/boys) tend to be cut better so have more length and width.

DD used to live in dark boys jersey or Chino type knee length shorts from Next and Tu in the summer paired with a sparkly t-shirt. Jeans I used to get her jeggings from Debenhams they went up to age 12 I think.M&S jersey school trousers at Primary. Fat Face and similar shops tend to be cut generously so are better for those with long arms or legs.

The trickier stage was when she moved into adult sizes at 12 / hit 5 ft 10 so that was jeans from Next and quirky t shirts from Qwer-tee. As she is definitely not into crop tops and had outgrown teen ranges. School trousers became an issue then too as all girls school trousers seem skinny around the thigh and too short so she wears women's Tall Next tailored trousers instead.

Buying trousers is an issue now and pretty much all come from Next in the Sale as buying 'Tall' clothes in store is neigh on impossible. She often just wears normal trousers which end up past her ankles with her converse like it's meant to be that way
