Where in London for shopping and sushi?

DD10 and I find ourselves with a morning in London tomorrow. We have tickets for Mrs Doubtfire for the matinee and are staying in Whitehall.

She wants to go shopping - where is good for a big Zara and maybe a few fancy shops to admire? Also thinking a sushi restaurant for lunch or tea would be good - any suggestions? Bonus points if it has a view!

suggestions would be much appreciated

Battersea Power Station.

It's got a huge Zara, and lots of other shops.

I don't know if it has a sushi place, but there are lots of restaurants of different types.
You could go there/back by boat
Timetable - Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

You cab get a lift up one of the chimneys, if you're after a view from higher up (but I think it's wince-inducingly overpriced)

Oooh thank you. I hadn’t realised that it was shops there now

Covent Garden. Near the theatre, Zara there plus plenty of other shops (and bigger Zara a short walk away on Oxford st). Plus inamo for sushi - no view but fun and games - or there are other options including sushi samba if you want to splash out and are lucky enough to be able to get a table

We had sushi at Fushan on New Oxford Street after the Mrs Doubtfire matinee, a short walk away a couple of months ago.

There's a Zara in Covent Garden.

I wouldn’t go to Battersea given where you are staying and theatre plans.

Stay central - you can walk up regent street and onto Oxford street where you will find every shop imaginable including massive Zara. Fancy shops… Bond Street of course, easy to walk along to get to Oxford street.

Sticks n sushi a chain but v accessible menu and one in soho or Covent Garden.

Could also visit Japan centre (Japanese supermarket) en route.

Covent Garden has a Zara. Sticks and Sushi is very nice but £££, Eat Tokyo is also good.

You can walk along embankment from Whitehall up to Temple for a good view then up to Covent Garden.

Covent Garden for shopping and go to sticks and sushi - it’s buzzy, reasonably priced and about ten mins from Shaftesbury theatre

DancingNotDrowning · 01/11/2024 20:39

Agree Battersea total pain in the arse from where you are.

Vax · 01/11/2024 20:40

Love the power station but agree with Covent Garden.

Inamo is nice but the sushi is rubbish there. Go to sticks n sushi - you can get good set menus

WhitegreeNcandle · 01/11/2024 20:57

A lot of votes for sticks and sushi! Thanks for suggestions.

Kulu Kulu sushi is amazing and has a conveyor belt system so you can drool at all the offerings as they go past. I would recommend getting there for opening at 12pm, so you get the freshest selection (although they are constantly making new items and do rotate after a while). It is very much an eat and leave situation though and at busy times you only get 45 mins.

You can walk to Oxford Street (which has Zara) in about 10 minutes.

@WhitegreeNcandle How did you and your daughter find Mrs Doubtfire OP?
I'm considering booking tickets for a London trip next year but the prices seem quite a bit higher than other London shows we've seen this year and want to make sure it's worth it! Did you book well ahead or find cheaper last minute tickets?

WhitegreeNcandle · 11/11/2024 12:59

@juggernorks We loved it. I would say as musicals go it's pretty good value for money at over 2 hours long. Compared to SIX's 70 minutes say. It was my DD's choice and it's not one I would have chosen but it had me laughing out loud. The story, sets and acting are brilliant. I would say the songs let it down slightly compared to others I've seen. We booked in advance as it was a treat for DD and didn't want to risk it. I think we paid £95 per ticket direct with the theatre for the second row in the first balcony. Views were fabulous. I was irrationally annoyed by the gender neutral toilets at the break. It was the Saturday matinee showing of half term and there were seats not filled so I would imagine there was the possibility of last minute seats.

Hope that helps.

Selfridge's, or Fortnums? They have shopping and restaurants/cafes. I know Fortnums used to have a lovely sushi section!
