Mini pill

hiiii, quick question about mini pill (progestin only
pill) as contraception.

so, I started taking it a few days before my period and my period came as normal but now my period has been going on for 10 days 🤔 it’s normally 7 days. I only took the pill for almost two weeks and stopped when my period wasn’t stopping as I knew that prolonged/irregular bleeding is a known side effect - I’d never really taken it properly before - was trying it out). Is this normal to continue bleeding even though I’ve stopped/not taken it for very long at all? Also, as I was taking it when my period started, does this mean it’s intercepted ovulation process? Or is there still a chance of ovulation? 🤔 any advice appreciated thanks

I’ve been on the mini pill for years and whenever I’ve had a break and restarted or used a different brand I’ve bled for some time, it’s a common side effect unfortunately. If you’ve stopped taking it then you’ll likely ovulate any time now so be careful.
As annoying as it is it’s worth persevering, after the initial bleeds I’ve had no other symptoms so it was worth it for me. If you’re not happy to keep using it then consider a different form of contraception or ask for a different brand of mini pill, for example I can only use cerezette, the one beginning with Z I was prescribed caused unbearable bleeding where cerezette was manageable and passed quicker.

In my experience, over time, it made my periods longer but lighter, so 5 days and light instead of 2-3 days and very heavy. Any change in hormonal contraception will make your periods potentially a bit weird for a few months. I’d have carried on taking it. You will not have any pregnancy prevention because the mini pill doesn’t work by stopping ovulation in most people (I still ovulate like clockwork on it in my mid 40s). It works by making it hard for sperm to reach the egg and for the egg to implant (in really simplistic terms).
