What brand hair dye to dye grey roots at home?

I want to choose a decent brand to dye my grey roots at home. I need them doing every 4-6 weeks and can't afford salon prices anymore. I've had to cut back to only going to the hairdressers twice a year 😭

Can anyone recommend a good brand to use?

I use Lloreal Preference, it’s really good for covering grey, I do tend to do roots first and maybe 5 minutes longer than the time on the instructions.

I use Garnier nutrisse.

I second this one.

Are t these just box dyes though? So once opened I'd just use the small amount I need for my roots then throw the rest away?
Isn't there any decent ones that you can just mix a small amount to use so less waste?

My hairdresser used to use affinage on me and in lockdown I bought some off her which was great but you can only buy it if you are a hairdresser. I'm looking for something similar so there's less waste and more cost effective.

Following. I’ve only found temporary roots coverage

Just mix half in a bowl and mix it up and save the other half doe next time.

I regularly use box dye to touch up my grey roots inbetween hairdressers appointments as I can't afford to go that regularly.

Buy a mixing bowl with brush in Poundland, then squeeze the same amount of the colour and developer into the bowl and mix then apply. One box dye kit means I can dye my roots 3-4 times.

I actually really rate a super cheap one - Schwarzkopf Poly Color Tint
You can usually pick it up for less than £2.50 a box from home bargains or savers.
I find it covers my really stubbon grey roots better than some of the more expensive box dyes.

Root touch up by clairol. It's perfect a small amount that comes with gloves and brush/comb thing and 2 dye things that you mix together. You put it on and leave for 10 minutes. I cover my head with a shower cap . Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse off.

olympicsrock · 01/11/2024 20:12

I use L’Oréal casting . Works really well on my greys and is easy to apply .

ThirdStorm · 01/11/2024 20:12

I’ve been using loreal Castings for a few years. I do my roots every 6 weeks, by week 5 they are showing. I do a full head maybe once a year but I find it retains the colour much better than roots. I love the conditioner it comes with.

Laiste · 01/11/2024 20:19

By 5 weeks isn't it because the roots are growing out, rather than the dye worn off ?

Genuine Q.

I use what my hairdresser uses which I buy from Sally’s. It’s gone up in price quite a lot but still get 3 root touch ups from a 60g tube

Rainbowdottie · 01/11/2024 20:29

I get that possibly you think it's a waste of money as you won't use a whole box dye, but how much are you paying your hairdresser? I would have thought a whole box dye, even if you don't use all of it, will be still be a massive saving?

I home coloured my own hair for years using box dyes and I went to various professional hairdressers for years and years. I'm now back doing my own hair, I just can't justify the prices anymore. I live in central London and the prices are just eye watering. I just cant pay it. I use either clairol or nutrisse and mainly buy it on offer. My hair is long so I have buy to buy 2 boxes but I think the clairol is only 4.50 a box at the moment. I wouldnt be upset at using loreal preference either, it gets good reviews.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 01/11/2024 20:32

i need mine colouring every four weeks which I go to a hairdresser, I get to week 3 and the roots look awful. Anyhow my hairdresser told me which colours to buy off Amazon, how to mix it etc, and I do my roots with it.

I work in FE and my self and DD use the trainee hairdressers in college who need “models”. Most recently I had highlights and lowlights (foils) toner, wash, cut, blow dry and all top products used it cost £35. The tutor supervises very closely, checking at every stage, it does take longer than a fully qualified stylist as they are trying to perfect the techniques. Also I have long hair and DD has very long hair.
All colleges offer similar also beauty treatments too. Not suggesting you should use every time but could save even more when you’re having the full works?
