I have only just come across this... phenomena?? I am nearly 40 and never heard of it, or the stories. Have I been living under a rock or is this pretty niche?

Rise of the Internet. Every brain dead twat thinks they can be famous with their bollocks.

I like watching milo rossi I think his name is. He does some funny debunking.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/11/2024 16:54

Do you really mean pseudoarchaeology, OP? Or pyschoarchaelogy? Very different things, although I reckon both are a bit weird.

nomorehocuspocus · 01/11/2024 16:57

Never heard the term.

In a nutshell - what is it?

I am pretty sure I mean Pseudoarchaeology, but maybe I should also learn about pyschoarchaelogy?

I'd appreciate an answer to this too.

Aliens, mostly. Sideline in 'Africans couldn't have done this without Aliens/white people/etc' style racism, 'Atlantis was/is real and this random rock proves it and it was actually a psychic library and communication tool for interplanetary wisdom', 'These lions/rocks at the gates of the city are so huge that only a God could have placed them there', etc, etc.

toomuchturmericinwatermelon · 01/11/2024 17:18

Thanks. I'd like to understand why it's important to rebuff their nonsense, is it similar to fake news, conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxers, etc? What sort of people end up believing this stuff?

This is what I thought.

A woman moved to our village a few years ago, with her American (nothing wrong with Americans, please don't think this is American hate probing) husband. He's a bodybuilder and had a YouTube professing all sorts of this shit; known sexist and racist, has a name for himself. She is a "trad wife". Some of the absolute shite they come out with, the pair of them. Home schooling (not home educating, biiiig difference) their "masculine boys", fundamentalist Christians, racist as FUCK.

No one speaks to them. I'm surprised they're still here tbh. Pair of them going berserk about the Southport Killings, smearing race hate and all under this "academic racism". Saw them last night hiding in their house when we went guising, the shits.

They're all nutcases, OP.

People who are easily brainwashed/men with superiority complexes. From what I know, it comes (for men) with the whole Red Pill shit. Religion, but I also know many religious people who don't think this way. They also seem obsessed with Vikings!

When the guy above realised DH was Norwegian, he went insane and got attached. My DH is not this kind of person. Quiet, musical, academic. He wouldn't leave DH alone, as though he had all of these answers or was some kind of god just because he was Scandi. It took DH asserting that he found his views hideous to make him back off.

The woman is Welsh, and from a tiny village with virtually no transport links. Doesn't like herself much, from what she's said and I've read. Not particularly clever. Already racist. So this line of thought must have been easy to fall into. I'd worry about her, but I can't be arsed with racists, and she's always been one so I've got zero sympathy.

This is his channel.
He explains a lot about pseudoarchaeology and the problems it causes.
People are thick enough without lapping up bollocks like
Aliens built the pyramids
Aliens did the nazca lines
This massive rock is really a giant tree
These worn steps are proof of an ancient nuclear bomb
This terrace farm is really a giant's staircase
The Baghdad batteries
This bone is not from a dinosaur, it's from a giant human

Lots of talk of things They don't want you to know 👀

A sign that I'm becoming unwell with bipolar is when I start believing nonsense things like ancient aliens.

Beethovensafari · 01/11/2024 19:41

Graham Hancock has been writing this stuff for years and years

Really? Some people will believe anything, won't they?

Plus Erich von Daniken before ...(and I am amazed to realise he is still alive) for us 1970s survivors ...

Abhannmor · 02/11/2024 10:42

I devoured books like Was God an Astronaut? as a kid. But even then I noticed a lot of open ended questions - which are not answered. Lots of speculation etc.
But those were innocent days. Before these 'alternative ' histories became infested with elitism and racism.

SerendipityJane · 02/11/2024 10:47

I devoured books like Was God an Astronaut? as a kid.

So did I ("Chariots of the Gods", "Will This Sell Millions ?", "Have Nationwide Called ?", "This One's for the Daily Mail") etc - alongside Enid Blyton where it belongs. One of the best gifts my DM left me with (possibly without knowing it) was a deep understanding of Betteridges Law of Headlines*. Which like a finely blended bleach can solve 99% of tabloid bullshit.

*Also works on books

I follow several Facebook 'interesting things from history' pages. This happens about twice a week:

Photo of old thing built by stacking straight-edged rocks.
Half a dozen comments: Wow, the edges are so straight! How did they cut those rocks with no metal tools? 🤔
Replies: It's got to be alien technology! 😜
Other replies: Or don't you know about previously advanced civilisations? 👀 'Science' wants to cover up the FACT that those who came before us had laser technology and weapons! 😠
Somebody: Rocks have natural break lines. Experienced stonemasons know how to hit them so they'll break cleanly.
Video: Modern stone-worker demonstrates how to break rock into straight-edged pieces using only another rock and a hammer.
Replies: Do people still not realise this could only have been built by aliens?

There really is no hope for them ...

Most archaeologists spend their time living under rocks.
