Shower chairs for wheelchair user

A bit niche but I'm getting a shower chair for my sons wetroom. He's a teen but I want it to be suitable for him as an adult.
Any recommendations? It needs to be attached but foldable as we only have the one family shower.

This sort of equipment is free via the local authority OT service.

The type of seat needed entirely depends on his needs and how he would be able to transfer on and off safely in the shower area. Would a wheeled one be an option ?

there are many different types on the market but his needs and height , balance etc would be the deciding factors.

Wall Hung and Drop Down Shower Seats

Wall hung shower seats fold up when not needed. Easy to use for users with mobility restrictions and easy to fold up when others want to use the same shower.

We can as OT but it can take months to get anywhere with them and we need some kind of solution, I would like him to have a shower at home this side of Christmas (he's been going to the gym for the last 2 years)

That’s not good that you would have to wait for months.

am happy to help. Wall hung seats are only suitable if he can safely transfer within the shower area and turn to sit etc when the flooring may be wet. You also need a solid wall to attach it to and consider that the height would be fixed if he is still growing . There are many factors that would be taken into account when deciding on a shower seat,

Could a temporary free standing one be a quick solution ? Again there is a massive range from small stools to ones with backs and arms and his sitting balance would be crucial when choosing.

He can transfer and I was looking at the ones with arms and legs for additional stability. It'd bring attached to a brick wall so very stable

We bough this one (photo attached) when DH was unexpectedly discharged for hospital for a month's rest at home. It turned out to be really useful and still in daily use

other things to consider -
are aesthetics important? A lot of this type of thing are ugly but you can get nicer ones if you look.
will he be able to reach the shower control / hose ?
can he move about to wash everywhere or will a cut out seat provide more access for washing ?

Thank you, lots of things to think about

I’m an OT so this is my bread and butter! I would recommend visiting your local mobility equipment provider as they will have many available to look at and try and often employ an OT for free advice. Or many councils have an adapted accessible home which has lots of equipment in situ that you can make an appointment to view. Again they may also have an OT or housing officer that will be very knowledgeable about equipment.

once you gave chosen the chair I tend to mark the size out in the shower cubicle with masking tape so you can visualise it in the space. Can he comfortably transfer in, reach the toiletries, shower head, complete his personal care tasks etc. within the space.

We're in bucks/ berks area if anyone has suggestions if places we can visit to try some out?

My local council have a shop where you can try things out. If you don't want to wait for a council delivery you can still try them out.

If you have a local mobility supplier they will let you try them too.
