Threadworms that will not go away, help!

Rainbow24x · 31/10/2024 21:23

Has anyone successfully got rid of threadworms using any other method other than using mebendazole? I’ve been cleaning everything constantly, cleaning nails, daily bed changes, hoovers, washing in the morning, Vaseline at night. Taken mebendazole more than once and it doesn’t work for us! I am demented to say the least and it’s really getting me down. Does anyone have any advice on things that have worked for them? This has been ongoing for months x

Buy some moviprep and do a colon cleanse, (I joke as this may be bad advice) but that stuff clears you out in 2 hours 😂

Fontainebleau007 · 31/10/2024 21:26

I'd definitely go see your GP if they're not going away.

User364837 · 31/10/2024 21:27

I’m sorry they’re horrid 😞
sometimes I’ve needed a second dose but it’s always worked in the end. And over time I don’t bother too much with the other stuff like washing all soft toys as it’s too overwhelming.

i have heard the GPs can give stronger stuff though.

I think you need to break the cycle I took three doses, one every week for three weeks. It might be psychological though unless you can see them in poo / on toilet paper. I think diet can help a lot. Lots of garlic , a gut cleansing grated carrot and apple salad. Apparently they hate garlic so mix garlic paste in with Vaseline and it’ll stop them coming out to lay.

Mistralli · 31/10/2024 21:30

Are your family getting reinfected/exposed?

Sadly, going to a primary school in quite an impoverished area, nits and worms were a regular occurance and some children didn't have parents who would get them treated.

The only thing you can do to mitigate that us teach stricter hygiene to any family member that might keep bringing the little blighters home.

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 31/10/2024 21:32

You or a child?

Theunamedcat · 31/10/2024 21:36

Cut your fingernails and go to the Dr's for stronger stuff

sewingstockings · 31/10/2024 21:38

Doctor told me to put underwear on kids at night and even gloves. That’s how they get reinfected.

Cosycover · 31/10/2024 21:40

I swear my youngest has had worms at least 5 times this year.

I give the medicine, clean all bedding, towels, teddy's. Make sure hands are washed etc and a month later they are infected again.

I figure it must be coming from school. Not sure what else we can do tbh!

Rainbow24x · 31/10/2024 21:45

Not reinfection as I have seen them throughout the treatment. Took the medication 2 weeks apart and it hasn’t worked as I’m still seeing them on underwear. I’ve spoken to the GP a few times and they don’t seem bothered and can’t give any other advice apart from what I’m already doing. I can’t understand why we aren’t breaking the cycle

As soon as we are awake it’s bums washed, pjs off, hands and nails cleaned. Beds changed daily, sometimes alternate days. Vaseline round bum at night. Vigorous hand washing my hands are so sore.

we have very strict hand hygiene and encourage DS to wash hands very often

I’ve been eating raw carrots for the past 2 days. They make you feel so horrible x

One of mine was plagued for years (we probably all were, but he was much more sensitive to them than the rest of us). The only things that helped (temporarily) were three doses of worm tablets, two weeks apart, and making him have a shower every morning. Ultimately, though, the only thing that finally worked for good was leaving primary school. Never had them in five years since.

Rainbow24x · 31/10/2024 21:59

Ah god I can’t cope with the thought of having these for years. This has been going on for us for the best part of a year now and it’s really getting me down

We all had them for months. The only thing that helped was Ovex tablets every two weeks for a three months.. then once a month for a while.

Was that recommended by GP or something you did on your own?

We went on holiday! Worked a treat. (Technically the holiday had been booked for over 6 months but it was very good timing to be able to get away from any eggs that were floating about.)

I’ll be sure to tell my partner this tomorrow lol. A holiday is what the Dr ordered! Out of interest did you take the medication then go on holiday or did you get rid without medication?

We did also take the medication.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 31/10/2024 22:29

In the end we dosed twice a day for 3 days. The weekly dose didn't work for my dc who had been infected a while, judging by his poos when the mega doses finally worked!
I think i was the only other person infected and the weekly dose worked on me.
DC was 7 at the time.
Now we take once or twice a term just in case - don't want it getting to that level again.

(Ovex/mebendanazole is prescibed in these high doses for other types of worm so i wasn't worried aboit using more than the PIL states. Desperate measures needed).

How are you doing? any updates?

porridgecake · 17/11/2024 16:10

They are probably coming back from wherever the source is on a daily basis. If it is school or nursery you have to write to them and ask them to inform all parents that there is an outbreak, ask them to treat their whole families, ask the school or nursery to clean the premises. Some of the parents might bother to do it which might reduce the spread a bit.

Luciev · 17/11/2024 16:36

Sellotape over the bum hole - they come there to lay eggs and that’s how reinfection happens. A very ancient doctor told me this trick and it worked with my boys. sounds gross but it prevents reinfection as the eggs get stuck on the tape.

Rainbow24x · 23/11/2024 06:48

I think DS still has them although he doesn’t seem to be bothered by them. I noticed white dots on his stool which I think is worms that are within the stool. My symptoms have definitely reduced although not fully gone. When I spoke to the GP she couldn’t give any more advice. She said she’s never known the medication not to work. My house is like a laundrette I’m constantly doing washings. Beds changing daily, clothes worn once. My hands are cut from washing them so much! There have been no signs in DS 2 who is 9 weeks, hoping that continues xx

How are you?

Ethny · 01/12/2024 11:20

How are you?

Overwhelmed with washings. I can’t sustain the daily bedding washing so we have moved to every other day. I still have them and I suspect DS1 has although I’ve not seen his poo in a few days. As I’m breastfeeding I don’t want to keep taking the medication so back to trying the strict hygiene method but then again there’s never been a time where I’ve not been strict on the hygiene. I wish they would just go away
