Can anyone help me identify this tree?

can anyone identify this tree? (See pic attached).

Every time I go past it, it has a strange mouldy smell. It’s not like any mould I have smelt before!

This is the same smell in my shed, I am wondering if it’s made of the same wood and growing the same mould.

Anyone know how to treat this type of mould in my shed?

Definitely some sort of Eucalyptus

flatwhiteinabucket · 31/10/2024 08:28

Although I wonder if it's dead? I can imagine mouldy Eucalyptus smelling terrible!😀 if you can get hold of any leaves, rub them in your hand, you'll soon tell if it is a gum tree.

It certainly looks like a eucalyptus though I couldn’t say which one.

It shouldn’t be smelling mouldy. They tend to smell fairly fresh the way pine trees do.

Lavenderlights · 31/10/2024 11:52

The smell in my shed is awful. It takes weeks for anything to lose the smell after it’s removed from there (and that’s after deep cleaning and having to leave in a room with coal to asbsort the smell).

Has something died under the shed? Can you describe the smell? Is it sweet, like mildew, acrid?

Lavenderlights · 31/10/2024 13:09

Nothing died under it and visible mould growing in it. I will attach a pic. I honestly don’t know how to describe the smell, except when I walk past the tree in the first pics it’s the exact same smell.

Not like any mould I have smelt before. I cannot liken it to anything either 😬

Have you been up there with a screwdriver and pulled the joint apart yet?

No! I am no handywoman. I was thinking of spraying it with a Mould and mildew spray!

Just wanted to say that if you have a very strong smell in your shed and one that smells like nothing else you've smelt, it may be rat urine and a sign rats are accessing the shed or living there

If you can face it take everything out and have a look round all the joints, corners and the floor to see if they are getting in.

There's honey fungus in my garden and when a tree is dying because of it, the smell of rotting mushrooms is something else. Is your shed rotting?

Nourishinghandcream · 31/10/2024 13:39

That corner of your shed is seriously damp.
Do you have guttering (many don't and just allow the water to run off the roof, splash onto the ground and soak the bottom of the shed wall/floor) and if you do, is it blocked/overflowing?

TheNoodlesIncident · 31/10/2024 13:40

It looks like there is a breach in the roof covering and water is getting in and rotting the particleboard of the roof. You need to get up there and have a look, probably you'll need to re-cover it with roofing felt or similar.

The shed is on a raised concrete base and the base all looks dry. I moved everything away from edges so nothing is touching it but there are some damp spots on the roof although no mould on this part.

Don’t bother wasting spray unless you have pulled it apart. The mould looks as if it’s well in there. You need to get to it all.

Go in and close the door so you can see if there are any bits of light coming through/holes in the roofing.

However, if the particle board is full of mould, replacing it will be the best thing and refelting the whole roof.
