I’ve had two companies out, similar offer. 9/10 panels, one large battery or two smaller. We use 15kw elec per year. quoted 17k and 19k.
cant you get grants to cover some of this?

Do your research, it can affect selling your property in the future.

Yes, that’s why I’m asking on here. There seems to be very little information without getting them around for a consultation, which has so far taken 5 hours!!

There was an article recently in the daily mail where some bloke couldn't sell a house due to the solar panels. I can't tell you the details but you could Google it.
I wouldn't put them on my property ever

It's cheaper to install if you buy them through a council buying scheme. Many councils have them every 2 years or so.
Don't be tempted to lease solar panels. Mortgage lenders dont like leased ones. Its a big initial outlay, only worth it if you plan to stay put for a while if you want to save enough on bills to get the money back. But owned solar panels and battery are a major selling point for many buyers as they save so much on bills. . Our utility bills are less than a third of our neighbours in an identical house\ similar useage- they have saved us £1000s of pounds in a relatively short time, and our neighbours are waiting for the next council offer so they can get them too!
Would recommend you look at octopus to sell your spare output to!
It helps if your roof is south facing like ours!
Hope that helps.

The article in the mail was about leased panels, where house owners lease their roof to some cowboy to put panels on it as the householder cant afford panels themselves. then the house owner loses control/ access to their own roof for up to 25 years and the house is unmortgageable. Madness.

So long as you aren’t renting and your roof is in good nick you won’t have a problem selling. You might, as evidenced above, limit your pool of buyers. I won’t say what I really think of people who join threads to put in their two cents worth what they’ve read in the DM or their neighbours brothers dog said like they do with electric cars (despite not owning a car probably).

We’ve had panels and battery for about 7 years (last of the FiT payments anyway). My parents have had theirs since the original FiT with no degradation even though some was expected from that age of panel. I would 100% do the same again but there are some caveats… if you don’t go for a battery you will either need to be a high daytime consumer or find a good selling rate. If you go for a battery and are a high nighttime consumer that’s probably the best of both worlds. There is no one-size fits all. high consumption would be electric car or air source heat pump/other electric heating.

Ps the council group buying schemes save between 10-30% on the cost and they check the contractors etc! Your council can advise if they do the scheme, and if so when the next round is.

Summerhillsquare · 30/10/2024 20:18

That sounds steep. Look at iChoosr or Council/Combined authority buying schemes as others have said.
