Underwear for hiking....

Any suggestions? I've heard bamboo is good, abd the men I know wear bamboo close fitting short types. I dont really know any other women who hike, to ask!

I do a lot of hiking and just wear my everyday underwear which could be a thong or massive pants!

Icedbear · 30/10/2024 11:33

I tend to avoid cotton because it gets wet and stays wet in the rain, but other than that just everyday microfiber knickers.

I haven't tried bamboo for underwear and I know it's supposed to be the next big thing and environmentally good, but I find e.g. bamboo tshirts horrible to wear, they make my skin feel greasy.

They are a bit of a luxury, but I’ve got some with a merino wool blend. They are good for multi day hikes.

Expensive but worth it.

I do lots of long distance multi day hikes and I’ve never bought special underwear. Just bring enough of the normal stuff to change twice a day. Money better spent on boots, socks and other gear.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/10/2024 13:00

Big pants.

Morven7 · 30/10/2024 13:00

You don't need hiking underwear

I came to say this!

I'm another wondering what I'm missing out on my wearing my normal pants when going out hiking.

isodontknow · 30/10/2024 14:54

I just wear my normal multipack ones from Next or M&S. Occasionally a Shewee compatible pair of if I know there will be no toilets and not many trees!

FrauPaige · 30/10/2024 14:55

Terrain? Distance? Weather? These are the factors which affect what clothing I wear for hiking. Underwear choice is more of a question of who will see it

Allnewtometoo · 30/10/2024 15:02

I usually wear my & s big pants but have found they can be a bit chafey round the edges, and also sweaty in the summer. I'm going distances between 10 and 25 miles. Various terrain, all year round.

Fancied trying some bamboo but was looking for recommendations really

I wear running pants because they're designed not to chafe or be a problem when sweaty, plus they dry really fast if you need to rinse them out in a hut. If it's a shorter walk, normal pants.

Stickykidney · 30/10/2024 15:14

Hey I know the problem! Constant adjusting of your get 'cut into' not perfect as they are not fast drying but currently wearing the step one boxers, I recommended to a friend and they didn't get on with them as they rode up the bum but they have a money back guarantee on your first pair of you don't like them. As I say not got for handwashing and drying for the next day.. and if you have them hanging off your pack to dry they are huge

Printedword · 30/10/2024 15:15

Last week I got my bottom wet negotiating a stream that had lost its proper stepping stones in this year of rain. It’s the first time I’ve ever got that wet. In Scotland or the Lakes - if it’s raining I have a coat on and my coat isn’t too short. If it’s pouring them there are over trousers if quick drying hiking trousers aren’t sufficient. Ive been a hiker and hill walker for 30 years. Special underwear has never really been necessary.

Skunkaniseed · 30/10/2024 15:15

Sorry to ask but this seems like a good place. I want to get hiking longer distances but worry what do you do about needing the toilet? Wild wees on secluded hikes I can go with but what about longer more popular hikes like Snowdon?

AChickenPooAndABiscuit · 30/10/2024 15:24

Brilliant name @Skunkaniseed ! I guess a Shewee or just squat and pee, both when you have some cover before approaching the busier bits of the walk?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/10/2024 15:29

I wear my M&S usuals but then I have them in a size bigger than I need so they are extra-baggy and don't chafe. I have the 'no VPL' ones which are lovely and soft.

When it comes to weeing, I just kind of 'tent' my coat around my lower bits to provide a bit of cover and have mastered the art of the 'stand and pull' to get it all back up again.

isodontknow · 30/10/2024 15:45

@Skunkaniseed probably nor recommended but I drink as much as possible the day before and then as little as possible during the day. Drink loads again when I'm on the way home. I've never done a multi-day hike though and wouldn't know what to do if I did!

Thiswayorthatway · 30/10/2024 16:07

M&S Good Move

sanityisamyth · 30/10/2024 17:46

I'd be more concerned with what was on my feet than on my arse!

Hercisback1 · 30/10/2024 17:51

Nice big ones.

For multi day, the seamless no vpl huge marks ones.
