Hi. Not sure where to post this one so figured chat would do.

I have a child (teen) who plays in band. I need to take out insurance for their instrument but because they're under 16 I can't do it in their name. However if i do it in my name i'm not sure its insured while they're playing it as i would have to declare it as mine but i'm not the one playing it iyswim and I can't find any with the option to add a minor.
Anyone have a similar situation? Thanks.

Phone Allianz (though they've been bought by another company). Hopefully they're still helpful.

Owly11 · 29/10/2024 21:34

Another vote for Allianz

Are you trying to take out specific insurance just for the instrument? DD's violin is just a specified item on our household contents insurance and is covered when out of the house.

redtrain123 · 29/10/2024 21:51

I was going to suggest your household insurance as well, in the same way that cameras are covered. Make sure you are covered for away from your house.

Kneeslikethese · 29/10/2024 21:54

No, it needs to be specific, household won't cover it while its on stage or unattended in a vehicle.

My DS has several instruments and they are all covered under our house insurance.

I've had very good experience with Allianz, actually speaking to a real person on the phone who was able to answer my very specific questions about what was covered in what circumstances.

Try Lark insurance who have bought Allianz

How bizarre that your household has that exclusion about being on stage (I can understand the one about not being left unattended in a car, but I’m sure mine says being left out of sight in a locked boot is ok).

Anyway, I’d speak to a specialist broker in your case, perhaps the Musicians Union can recommend one?

Mumdiva99 · 30/10/2024 06:40

My kids instruments are on the house insurance.

Household insurance will cover them in the house or in a locked car out of sight. Trouble is my son is the drummer so too the kit is too big to be out of sight. My household insurance also doesn't cover them onstage, typically the drummer headlining brings the kit (my son) and the support act use his kit, there's lots of time therefore that it's set up on stage and it isn't in his care. I'll ring Allianz (Lark) today and speak to them, thanks for the suggestions all.

Ah - I did wonder if it was a double bass or a harp or something!

Kneeslikethese · 30/10/2024 08:22

yes sorry, i should have specified drum kit. I'm so used to carting the bloody thing all over the place I forget not everyone's instrument is so big!

Maybe give BBIS (brass band insurance services) a call - don't be put off by the brass band reference, I've got brass band and non-brass band instruments covered with them including drums (music teacher). They allow you to insure 'on behalf of' a minor and is who my parents insured with on behalf of both myself and my sister as we were growing up.

My parents had to make a claim on behalf of my sister when she was young and found it very straightforward. I made a claim more recently and they were brilliant.
