Anyone used the councils 'bulky item' removal? Picked up by a charity instead of the council?

Got a new mattress recently and had no way to get rid of my old one (I don't drive due to disability) so I contacted my local council and booked a bulky item collection. The mattress wasn't in the best shape, I have cats and it was full of plucks and they also managed to spill a full can of pepsi over it so just ended up getting a new one. My point is it was in bad shape and was fit to go to the dump.

I also had a broken tv that no longer switches on, and a broken microwave which no longer worked so I left them out too.

I have seen other people on my street have collections and their stuff is always taken by a council van, they throw the stuff in the back and that's that.

For my collection a van pulled up with the name of a charity on the side of the van with the words 'Thank You for the donations'

A charity just took my broken items instead of the council taking it.

Just wanted to know if this is normal? I feel bad a charity now has three broken items to get rid of, I had no idea they were being picked up by a charity at all.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Councils now contract with charities so that anything that can be recycled is, rather than going straight to the dump and in to landfill. It s tially saves them money.

If your items were truly awful, they will be dumped anyway, it's just an extra step.

Yes, normal, the council will have asked them to go.

This is just outsourcing. The Council will have paid the charity. We have two charities here that regularly do dump clearances on a fee paying basis.
