I've just been reading that - it's bonkers. I haven't read the article you posted so I will now, to see if it makes any more sense

Soonenough · 29/10/2024 10:10

What did they think a bunch of nutters could do ?Apparently thought they should run the British justice system. Unbelievable how one individual can impose the most bizarre theories on people.

Donald Trump - just saying .

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2024 10:15

I'm none the wiser as to what they were going to do with the poor man if they had managed to kidnap him.

And why the coroner for Essex?

I was going to post about this! Just deranged. They remind of those people who walked into hospital wards during Covid and spouted nonsense. That poor coroner though.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2024 10:24

Although googling coroners to try and work out what these loons objected to, I found there is actually a role called "coroner for treasure". And now I am considering a career change.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, they believe in "pseudolegal theories"-- which are basically conspiracy theories about how the law works often propagated by charismatic figures who make money selling their secret legal expertise. Soveriegn Citizens and Freeman on the Land are common types but it seems like a new variant pops up every other month. In this case, it looks like perhaps they took their belief in their own personal sovereignty to mean the solicitors were acting unlawfully and had to be citizen arrested by them. These types of people get into massive legal difficulty all the time (because their beliefs are nonsense) and so either they admit they were wrong or they escalate against the "corrupt" legal system.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2024 10:29

Ahh - a Freeman of the Land variant. I have come across those loons in various jobs.

They are very tedious, but at least they only wrote insane green ink letters and didn't try and kidnap me!

There's a forum which discusses these sorts of cases which has collected some more of the details.

I once knew a FMOTL guy— he started out as a harmless hippie type but then got progressively more unhinged. He ended up getting his van impounded for not being taxed or insured, because he didn't believe in their juristiction over him.

Now you can't even arrest a detrimental necromancer... - Quatloos!

I think it's more than personal sovereignty but that they are the authority that has legal jurisdiction with the right to judge, not elected parliament or the court system. Bonkers!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/10/2024 10:38

I read about this yesterday but I feel like I only scratched the surface because none of it made sense! I don't understand what they were trying to achieve or why.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2024 10:52

@mossylog "a theory that the post office is capable of ruling the world". That is brilliant, my local post office isn't capable of organising a queue, they may struggle with rule the WH Smith downstairs, let alone the world.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/10/2024 10:54

I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't understand it. They are clearly all barking

BobbyBiscuits · 29/10/2024 10:55

What a load of weirdos! It really is bizarre how people can get sucked into all this nonsense. You'd think they must be thick but it really isn't just that is it. They're vulnerable for whatever reason to being exploited.

PattiSmithsPattis · 29/10/2024 10:58

Cults normally start with a mentally ill person who wholeheartedly believes their own bullshit, that attracts people who may be lost and vulnerable, who then are brainwashed.
Very difficult to stop.
Warren Jeffs still runs things from behind bars. His followers were/are(?) allowed to visit him to listen to and record his bullshit!

Fuck knows why this cults focus was on this man, but I don't think the outcome for him would have been good had they managed to kidnap him. Although tbh their plan was nuts.

ThePoshUns · 29/10/2024 11:19

It's so absurd. How do people fall for this nonsense? They really must have something lacking in their lives.
I've met many FMOTL over the years and they are unhinged as well.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/10/2024 11:24

This is all (geographically, not philosophically) very close to home for me!

what struck me was that all of the accused still 100% believed it all!

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/10/2024 11:25

Such a weird event. Can’t get my head around just, why?
