Cleaning walls routinely....?

BigDahliaFan · 29/10/2024 07:27

Just dawdling in FB and saw an American post on cleaning walls using white vinegar and something...

Lots of replies, that seemed serious, about how that would make their wall cleaning regime easier.

I have never cleaned a wall unless a) the dog has splashed mud on it exuberantly or b) sugar soap a kitchen before painting.

Am I a slob? Is this a thing?

Occasionally I will use a magic eraser sponge to clear off any scuff marks. Our kitchen is pure white so places where the wall is touched so get marked.

I never saw walls as something that needed 'cleaning' though...

No I do get the long duster out at this time of year if I see a few cobwebs and dust the cornice areas and the corners. Like you say other times it’s to clean a splash. I hoover the skirting boards every few weeks. Plus my Fa&B matte paint would definitely come off if I washed it! 😂

sorrynotathome · 29/10/2024 07:38

Relax. It’s not a thing.

TranscendentalMedication · 29/10/2024 07:40

I'm a clean freak and I really don't want to add wall-cleaning to my list of obsessions 😭

Pigeonqueen · 29/10/2024 07:41

Never routinely cleaned a wall. Surely it would just damage the paint?

BookishType · 29/10/2024 07:45

Never, unless to remove a mark or prior to painting.

In our hall where the wall meets the ceiling, we have about 8 spiders’ nests and one ladybird crop which has decided to winter there. I feel I ought to remove, but I feel mean.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2024 07:49

I clean walls before painting and spot clean areas if there has been a spill or splash but that is it.

I did clean all the walls one dementely bored weekend in lockdown. Didn't notice any difference.

DreamingDaisies · 29/10/2024 08:13

The cream walls on my staircase have toddler fingerprints all the way up the sides. I'll probably repaint rather than clean it!

I did clean a wall in the kitchen for a similar reason and it's never looked the same.

Cheeesus · 29/10/2024 08:15

Maybe it’s needed in dustier places?

shellyleppard · 29/10/2024 08:16

I only clean the kitchen walls when something gets splashed on them, the shower wall gets a monthly clean. Anything else.....🤔

cuppaonce · 29/10/2024 08:27

i washed the ceiling, it was black with mould spores i guess from dampness from kettle steam.

Autumndayz77 · 29/10/2024 08:30

I used washable paint in all my rooms. I do wipe them from time to time as have 3 kids and high traffic areas have sticky hand marks etc. Have used magic eraser on stains to various degrees of success!

Singleandproud · 29/10/2024 08:31

I wipe down the walls and wood work twice a year (Easter and Oct half term), I am mostly slovenly though by MN standards but am always amazed at how much better everything looks afterwards.

Leave them alone, please. Nature is really struggling this year.

Walkinginthesand · 29/10/2024 08:36

I cleaned my walls one time in preparation for painting. Spruced the room up so we'll I didnt get around to painting.

buffyspikefaith · 29/10/2024 08:40

I dust them with one of those flash mops and a dry dusting pad
That's about it
Bathroom walls get wiped occasionally

Leavesontheroad · 29/10/2024 08:41

Saw a man mopping the walls in hospital this weekend. Looked like very hard work!

I will ☺️

It’s already freaking out several friends 😂

Shufflealongnow · 29/10/2024 08:45

Small or heavily used bathroom walls yes, once or twice a year - humidity + lotions and sprays + towels flapping about seems to stick dust to the tiles. And I magic eraser any marks off normal walls and feather duster away any obvious cobwebs.

But, even as someone with really high spring cleaning standards, life's too short to wipe down walls otherwise.

Laiste · 29/10/2024 08:47

I wash the tiled walls in the bathroom sometimes

I hoover the rest of the house's painted walls when (Henry on hard floor setting)(doesn't mark the walls and brings off and clingy dust and bits). I do the corners and dangly cobwebs which seem to appear overnight with the hoover pipe.

autumnbake · 29/10/2024 08:49

I washed the walls every few weeks when we had a dog/white walls.

Nowadays it's only really to tidy up any scuff marks every month or so.

BigDahliaFan · 29/10/2024 10:41

Maybe it is for dustier places....(though my place is pretty dusty to be fair...)

When the kids were little I tried to clean there inevitable marks but gave up and decided I'd paint over it when they stopped. But no I'd don't clean my walls. Hard enough to keep the floor clean before I start tackiling walls.

GlassHeart1 · 29/10/2024 14:03

A mention of vinegar perhaps suggests tiled/glass/bathroom walls as that would make them more sparkly?
