I like:
Sunset Boulevard
All about Eve
The Red Shoes
Went the day well?

MissHalloween · 29/10/2024 21:51

Not as old but I love PaperMoon, Whistle Down the Wind, The GoBetween, Cathy Come Home.

DanceMumTaxi · 29/10/2024 21:55

Little women - the one with Elizabeth Taylor.

upinaballoon · 29/10/2024 21:59

'Gigi' is surely old enough to count. The lovely scene in front of the fountain, when he realizes he loves her.

Loved the Ealing comedies.
Don't know the name of it ..bank robbers buried the cash got jailed and found their loot buried in confines of a newly built police station.

The Big Job with Sid James and some of the other Carry On regulars.

Hoglet70 · 30/10/2024 06:58

I love this thread OP! I am busy writing down the names of films I haven't seen.

rockstarshoes · 30/10/2024 07:22

Love Sabrina, Casablanca, the African Queen but my 2 absolute favourites are Houseboat with Cary Grant & Sophia Loren when she transforms the gold monstrosity of a dress & The VIP's with Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor when they are all delayed at the airport! Although that might be a little later than some of the others!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/10/2024 07:26

Giant with James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson - gorgeous cast

Vertigo

BadgersGalore · 30/10/2024 09:27

I love so many of those already mentioned and can't possibly choose a favourite (although I'm especially fond of Brief Encounter)! I adore anything with Cary Grant and James Stewart especially.

I don't think these have been mentioned already; The Bells of St Mary's (Ingrid Bergman, gorgeous), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Shop Around The Corner.

I'm very partial to a vintage Christmas film - The Bishop's Wife, Christmas in Connecticut, It's A Wonderful Life - and found this amazing list with a lot of titles I want to see!

Where do you all find old films? Is there a streaming service that has them? I used to have a lot recorded saved on my TiVo box but the bastards at Virgin Media changed it and I lost them all AngryAngry and not only that but i lost the ability to set a Wish List search to record films when they are eventually shown in tv. Seriously guys do not be persuaded to 'upgrade' your TiVo to a 360 Box.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/10/2024 09:37

I've still got a DVD player and am keeping it until it won't work anymore!

Grawlix · 30/10/2024 10:01

@BadgersGalore a surprising number of old B & W films are on YouTube, complete. Otherwise, Talking Pictures. If you’re in the SE, London Live sneaks out a lot of very good old films in the afternoons.

BadgersGalore · 30/10/2024 10:08

@Grawlix thank you, I'm not in the south east unfortunately. I've tried to watch films on YouTube but I find the quality is often not great? It spoils it for me if they're too fuzzy and crackly.

DeanElderberry · 30/10/2024 10:12

So so many including most of the ones already mentioned - two British ones, Alive and Kicking from the mid 50s, three old ladies run away from their care home and make a wonderful new life, and The Green Man with Alastair Sim, same vibe as the Ealing comedies but better parts for the women.

Ninotchka 1939, so funny. The Shop Around the Corner, 1940.

And if you want an American trio that complement each other well, even if one is right outside the date range suggested, Sullivan's Travels from 1941 with Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake, Night of the Hunter from 1955 (with Lilian Gish, still beautiful in old age) and O Brother Where Art Thou. Trust me, they work together for a weekend long watch.

DeanElderberry · 30/10/2024 10:26

I have a DVD player and watch DVDs on my laptop. And have bought DVDs of films by Sturges, Luvitch, Kapra, Hitchcock- did anyone mention Young and Innocent, and both versions of The Man Who Knew Too Much. I actually prefer the Doris Day one. And North by Northwest of course.

Bell Book and Candle, Jimmy Stewart is too old for Kim Novak but it's still an excellent movie. And Pyewacket is an excellent cat.

We are thinking of buying a cheap back up one ...dw has over 450 DVDs.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/10/2024 12:44

@Thevelvelletes - it's worth it. I like to choose what I want to watch, not have it dictated by what's available

PortobelloToad · 30/10/2024 12:50

@DeanElderberry Ooh, The Shop Around The Corner is fabulous. (I also love You’ve Got Mail which is the modern updated version but not appropriate for this thread!)

I’ve just found it on DailyMotion ☺️ I’ve got the afternoon off work tomorrow so that’s my plan. A big cafetière of coffee, some cake and James Stewart 💖

A short answer to the OP's question would be anything with Jimmy Stewart.

Loved the Ealing comedies.
Don't know the name of it ..bank robbers buried the cash got jailed and found their loot buried in confines of a newly built police station.

The Big Job 1965.
my favourite is This Happy Breed but I do love an old British film especially an Ealing comedy or a Powell and Pressburger. Another good one is Went the day well? A small village is invaded by fifth columnists and how they fight back.
Talking Pictures is fabulous for showing old films and have some little gems.

Christmaschristingle · 30/10/2024 15:05

@BadgersGalore

I collect Google points, it asks me, did you go to any of theses stores like tesco etc and I chose one if I have been there and it gives me a 19p or. 08 p or 25 p and this adds up and I then use those to pay for old films on u tube.

I've got 10 pounds credit I had 20 a few months ago.
Also amazon prime has some and bbc I player good.

I've just put the tv on and while channel hopping, I found that Film 4 is half way through Dead of Night - perfect Hallowe'en viewing for lovers of old films. Just about to see if there's a Film 4 +1.
