New oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer needed.

All of our electrical kitchen appliances here me. The oven is setting the CO alarm off so has had to be disconnected. The dishwasher has finally given up the ghost. The fridge has a fever and runs hot and cold and pours water onto everything.

My Emergency fund doesn’t cover everything packing up at once, but still. My question is, who should I buy from? I’m going to take out a subscription to Which to find out what’s best so that will limit me. I want somewhere with good customer service. I was always a John Lewis customer but I can’t pay a premium for dreadful customer service. I’m in London.

Thank you

We changed our dishwasher a couple of years ago. We only have a narrow space so we needed a 45cm one, and in that size the choice is quite limited (and they don't last as long as 60cm ones). We had the choice between a cheap unknown brand name and Bosch. We went for the Bosch, although it was £600 instead of £400, and we've been very pleased with it. It has an app that tells you when to add salt and finishing liquid etc, which is a bit of a gimmick but appeals to the nerd in the family. It's also super-quiet, and it has a "shush" mode where it runs slower and even quieter for half an hour, although we've never felt the need for that.

The service seems pretty good too. We were getting warnings about cleaning the filters more and more often, despite diligent scrubbing. We logged a question on the service website and they sent a technician out. He explained that there was one small area that we needed to clean next to the filter, which wasn't mentioned in the manual. We were not charged for this visit even though there were nothing wrong with the machine (I guess they knew the instructions weren't quite perfect). We will need a new washing machine in a year or two and Bosch will be high on the list.

(I have no affiliation with Bosch other than a satisfied customer!)

Look up your local Euronics store. They can often source specific models from suppliers but carry a good range in store/warehouse.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/10/2024 11:05

We've had to get a new fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer (also microwave and kettle) in the last 6 months and have
had excellent service from AO. Lites of choice on their website, lots of super beefed - but perfectly good - models discounted.

AnchorWHAT · 28/10/2024 11:24

Ao have always been my go to, if you are buying all three items then join their five star thing, it gives free delivery, unpacking and recycling boxes etc which would cost around £60 appliances are cheaper to five star members too.

user2848502016 · 28/10/2024 11:36

We had to buy new dishwasher and washing machine at the same time a few weeks ago, ended up buying from AO for their 6 months interest free credit and good delivery service. I joined AO membership thing which meant I got free delivery and recycling so made it worth is as I was ordering 2 items.

Dishwasher is a Bosch and the best one we've had definitely

Hamsterdamn · 28/10/2024 11:43

You stars! Thank you. AO sounds great for availability, credit and tge membership benefits. I’ll look at them and Euronics.

i had a Bosch washing machine and it was expensive and packed up quickly and the customer service was dreadful. That put me off what I had always thought was a great brand.

Cannot help with recommending new appliances but as far as looking up which brands come out well with Which, pop into your local library they should still be able to show you copies with advice so you dont have to subscribe.

Mudflaps · 28/10/2024 12:47

Be careful using Which, we were form believers in it but it's failed us twice. First time was with a fridge freezer, we picked a best buy from Samsung which died two months after thevtwo year warranty and we had zero help from Samsung, second time was during covid we needed an oven, choose a Hisense best buy and it's dreadful, it's at least 20° out, I've ended up buying an oven thermometer and trying to work with it but it'll be replaced soon. Shopping for a plumped American fridge freezer ATM and am absolutely dreading making a choice on one.

AO are really good for any appliances. Or John Lewis. AO price match. £64 refund back recently no fuss on a price match. I sent evidence of cheaper price and had refund next day

Bergmum · 28/10/2024 13:20

If you're in London may I recommend a shop called Garland. They are almost always better priced than John Lewis etc and the guy there (I think he's called Raj) gave me really good advice.

Sunnyside4 · 28/10/2024 13:27

We had something similar a few years ago and prioritised what we really needed.

For me, it'd be a fridge as food needs to be kept safely. Then I'd say a cooker for warming meals in next few months. A dishwasher would be bottom of my list. In fact, we have our dishwasher hasn't worked for a few years, and I don't miss the faff of rinsing, loading, uploading and then having wash something.

Sunnyside4 · 28/10/2024 13:28

The other option for you could be call out a repair person and have one repaired

Hamsterdamn · 28/10/2024 13:51

The fridge can plod along for now. We just won’t use the freezer and live in London so can pop to the shop in two minutes. I’ll put my milk on the windowsill.
it is only the oven that scares the CO alarm so we just use the air fryer with the hob.
I hate not having the dishwasher because it’s a small flat with living and working and kitchen area combined and I hate seeing the dirty dishes.
We priced up the call out fees and it’s sadly not financially worth doing.
will look into Garland, great intel, thanks.
I am not sure if I can cope with Which not being reliable. That might just push me over the edge. Good shout re the library but it’s never open when I can get to it and the magazine is a bit hit and miss with what it covers. can sign up to Which for a month and cancel anytime.

IKEA is good value on appliances and sometimes do a 3 for 2 deal!

Ihateslugs · 28/10/2024 13:58

Another recommendation for AO, they are competitively priced and deliveries are very speedy. I recently bought a new fridge freezer from them when I was having a new kitchen, it was delivery only as the kitchen fitter was not quite ready for it to go in place. It remained in the packaging for a couple of days but when the fitter unpacked it, he noticed a dent in the casing. Even though the dent was at the back and could not be seen, I still contacted AO with photos and they sent me a £100 refund as I did not want it replaced.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 28/10/2024 15:58

Another vote for AO. They’ve got a good range of products, from budget to top of the range, and their customer service is fantastic.

Hamsterdamn · 29/10/2024 17:52

We are going to look at Garland as it’s local and then try A0 if that’s doesn’t work. We have decided that the dishwasher is the priority and then the fridge. We are doing Christmas dinner but we’ve got lots of lovely neighbours who’ll be away and said we can use their ovens. Many thanks all.
