Anyone given up their desktop computer/laptop and got an ipad/tablet to replace it?

Had a desktop computer since 2003, not the same one, various ones over that time and have become so used to using them.

Been thinking lately of getting rid of it and getting an ipad.

Has anyone done this? Do you regret it?

@wtfhigo if you have a child who doesn't have their own device, it's worth thinking about their needs too. As they move into secondary school they will need to learn to use a keyboard and mouse, and to use Office applications to help prepare them for further education and/or employment. Don't assume they will be taught all this at school - in this post-lockdown world, teachers who set homework often assume that all children have access to a computer at home and already know how to do the basics. At school they will learn how to write computer programmes, not how to use single sign-on, manage passwords or use word processing software.

Most major employers use Microsoft technologies, fewer use Google (cheaper) or Apple (more expensive, but often favoured by creative industries).

You've unlocked a forgotten memory there! We had to teach all the kids how to use mice as their primary schools all had laptops. High school had desktops in the library, but they were expected to have basic knowledge about using a PC when they started.

I would love to have a desktop PC again - I have quite a hefty laptop, as I knew I would mostly be using it at home and not carting it around, but when dp admired it I pointed out to him that at the time I thought he needed something more portable. DP has a thing that's a cross between a tablet and a laptop with a detachable but small keyboard. I didn't anticipate the changes brought by events in 2020 - he still works from home a lot and has made the mistake of allowing DS2 to use his laptop - DS2 doesn't take care of things and has really trashed it.

I use my laptop with a mouse plugged in as I really don't like laptop mousepads, and when my sister bought DS1 a laptop he had got used to playing games on mine - so at his request I bought him a mouse and mousepad. Thankfully he's not quite as destructive as his little brother. Interestingly though, now at 17 and doing A levels, and preparing for an extra Maths exam (university entrance related) he seems to be mostly working on with pen and paper - perhaps it's a reaction to spending substantial parts of years 8 and 9 in lockdown, and online lessons at home after that because of COVID related teacher shortages.

I definitely wouldn't replace this thing with a tablet, if anything I'd like to go the other way.

The thing my kids hate about uni is the reliance on tech for everything. One of them spent most of their A levels working with pen and paper, partly because they find they learn better if it's been written by hand. But also because they spent GCSE years stuck in front of a screen, teaching themselves with little teacher support. We blame kids for always having their nose in technology, but it's often adults who are inflicting it on them.

As a pp said, quite apart from the form factor of the device you are talking about the huge step of moving from the Microsoft ecosystem to the Apple ecosystem.
Personally I couldn't do it, I've been using PCs since the early 90s. I have tonnes of old software that will only work on a PC. I do a lot of work in the standard Microsoft Office apps, which regardless of what anyone says, I don't believe work in the same way on a apple device. So it's Microsoft forever for me.

The second decision, the form factor is quite separate as you can buy desktop, laptop, and tablet devices for both Microsoft and Apple operating systems.

I switched from a desktop to a laptop for work, but when you are working at speed for hours, a decent keyboard is a must. I avoid touch screens, because if they break they are very hard to fix.
