Fleas! Please help!

Cats got fleas! They are indoor cats so never had them before and we obviously didn't do a good job of cleaning the buggars off things like their cat furniture because the buggars are still here and now all over the house. DS is covered in bites because he lets the cats in his bed. Ive washed all our bedding and hoovered the mattresses and after handling the bedding found a flea on my arm! Why won't they die!
Please help with suggestions of treatments that wont harm the cats. They can't be treated for another week. Can you reccommend flea bombs?

I have a houseful of cats, have had fleas MANY times over the years and literally the only thing guaranteed to work is the flea stuff from the vets. Mine are also housecats but you bring them in from other peoples houses. Don’t buy bombs or stuff in supermarkets, that’s all stuff that worked years ago but fleas have since built up a resistance to.
I de-flead a year ago after bringing them home from DSDs house.
Stronghold plus drops for the cats from the vets (prescription only) and Indorex spray for the entire house. (I know you said the cats can’t be treated for a week, so I’d just put up with the fleas until they can be)
Do a room at a time, keep cats out of any room that’s been treated for at least a couple of hours (spray, leave doors shut for an hour, then ventilate for an hour)
Seriously, nothing else will work as well. No point trying to save money by buying the cheaper stuff, it won’t kill the eggs and you’ll be stuck in an endless cycle

Summerishere123 · 26/10/2024 21:02

Thanks. It was the stuff from the vets we used which makes me think we just didn't de-flea their beds etc properly. I will look into that spray thanks.

Once we have done a room can we let the cats back in or will that just reinfest the room?

How many doses of medication have you used ?
Have you done repeat doses exactly 4 weeks apart ?

Yes you really need the spray as well. De fleaing just the cats makes the ones that bite the cats die, but the little bastards lay hundreds more eggs in the carpet too. Which is why the house spray is so important.
With the indorex, do a room at a time to keep the cats safe. Pick a room to start with, make sure the cats are somewhere else in the house, hoover the room, spray about 20cm from the floor and make sure you go over the whole area including right up to skirting boards, shut the door and don’t go back in for an hour. An hour later ventilate the room for an hour or so, then after those 2 hours are up it should be safe for the cats again. As long as you use the stronghold and then the indorex exactly as it states on the can, it’s foolproof. I’ve never had an issue with getting rid using the vet sprays.
You will get bitten lots more in the days that follow as the fleas desperately try to survive 🤣 but the buggers will die
The spray carries on working for 12 whole months, so you don’t even have to do the whole house on the same day. Take your time with it

OK, get tge front line stuff to treat the cats. Contact your local council, they will come out to spray house. Book them, before they come you need to wash all soft furnishings, clean whole house. Then they spray and will repeat 2 weeks later if necessary. I promise this will work. Don't bother with spray from pet shop, it isn't as effective, snd by tine you have bought enough fir house, you might as well have paid for council.

Can't get the council out if the cats are in the house.

MeMyCatsAndI · 26/10/2024 21:18

Also front line doesn't work anymore they're immune to it. You want advantage flea drops.

This Is absolute rubbish 🤣 you absolutely do not need to get the council to fumigate the house. They’re fleas, not cockroaches!
You buy spray from the vets, on prescription, not from a “pet shop” 🤣
And front line is not as effective anymore, it’s stronghold plus that works now.

MeMyCatsAndI · 26/10/2024 21:21

@WhimsicalGubbins76 is stronghold plus better than advantage please?

It is yes. Advantage does still work though don’t worry. It’s not as strong as stronghold plus (and stronghold plus covers other parasites as well, hence the plus) but as long as you’re also treating the house then advantage should still work

virgocatlover · 26/10/2024 21:26

Are they cats or kittens? The kitten flea stuff didn't work on my cat until he could have the adult one.

Kittens can be treated with the same one from the vets as adult cats, the dose amounts are based on weight rather than age. I’ve treated kittens as young as 9 weeks with stronghold plus

Summerishere123 · 26/10/2024 21:38

They are cats not kittens. They have only had one dose, 3 weeks ago.
They can be done again a week on Monday. We will do the house and the cats the same day. I am trying to wash clothes and put them away but the fleas are probably jumping on the clothes as they dry 😫

Get a flea comb and comb them daily too, it will help.

MeMyCatsAndI · 26/10/2024 21:42

Thanks @WhimsicalGubbins76 once the advantage I have has run out, I'll give that one a try. Smile

Honestly OP, don’t worry about that. I used to be that vigorous as well years ago. But in the last 12 years I’ve had fleas on 3 separate occasions and I didn’t bother washing all the clothes and stripping the beds. I just treated the cats then vacuumed the rooms before spraying. Worked like a charm each time. The reason stripping the beds and washing the clothes isn’t necessary, is that the fleas don’t live on or in them. They jump on them yes, but then they jump back onto the floor, where they come into contact with the spray which then kills them.
The last time we had fleas I didn’t even bother hoovering every room first, and I still got rid of them first time

I have already ordered one to stop the poor buggars scratching.

Do not get the stuff front the shops , fleas are resistant to majority of It.
.
Stronghold flea treatment.
Indorex spray

Wash all bedding , hover everything . Mattresses fabric furniture carpets
Spray the indorex as instructed.

If you can keep the cats confined to one room until the fleas are under control .

I recently had to do my 3 bed house and it took me all day to do the washing hoovering and spraying . I kepted the cats in one room with access outside ( mine are indoor/outdoor cats ) for about 1 week , I didn't let them in the bedrooms for 2 weeks .
And I haven't seen a flea since !

I was extra thorough as I'm autistic and I had to make sure everything was 100%

I orginally bought front line from amazon and After 2 month the fleas were still there so I went to my loan vet who told me the fleas are resistant to most treatments bought in shops and she said stronghold will do the job and it did.
You can by it from any vets
