Adult education classes - yes this actually happened

Reflecting on this recently, but this actually happened to me a while ago now.

56 year old attending adult education classes once a week for a certificated course. Hobby related but not sure this is relevant at all.

I was presented, in class one evening by a member of non teaching staff, with a 100% attendance certificate.

I. Kid. You. Not.

If it is an accredited course attendance is required to qualify, usually 80%.

Zonder · 26/10/2024 11:17

You got a 💯 attendance certificate for going to a night class? Did anyone else? How funny. Not sure I'd bother starting a thread on it though, unless I'm missing something?

Singleandproud · 26/10/2024 11:30

Did you have to get up to accept it? Did you get a round of applause?

I wonder if it's something they do for those that get the course funded by an organisation can show it to prove they attended and do it for everyone so as not to make them stand out. All though a typed letter in a brown envelope handed out on the desk would be more age appropriate.

Not clear what the issue is here?

BarbaraHoward · 26/10/2024 11:33

Grin I laughed OP! Did you hang your certificate on the wall? Stick it on the fridge and call all the family round to praise it?

evtheria · 26/10/2024 11:34

All that's missing is you getting to go and pick something from a lucky dip jar ☺️

EmpressOfTheThread · 26/10/2024 11:34

Why is that a problem? You may need proof of attendance at some point. Anyway. Surely it's not an issue.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 26/10/2024 11:35

I hope you framed it and hung it in the downstairs loo 👌🏻

WoodyCoppicePlantationAlmaMater · 26/10/2024 11:37

@BarbaraHoward I got an extra sticker on my reward chart 🤣

Seriously though I did find it a bit patronising tbh 🙄 - we were all adults.

I wouldn’t think anything of this personally 🤷‍♀️

Dotto · 26/10/2024 11:40

No issue. I feel sorry for them, if they find this thread.

BreezyEagle · 26/10/2024 11:46

Hi I can see the issue I think.
At 35 I went back to college and it is difficult as an older person to do this. The course I was on I was certainly not the oldest but I was older. I found it difficult at first the age gap alone was difficult to bridge with younger tutors and students.
I had a similar experience where they would constantly make us bring our work up to the board and honestly it did feel at times quite targeting and immature. I learned it was to make older students feel more confident in the environment.
Although the attendance was always brought up and spoke about weekly it often felt like I was back at school and totally out of my depth. It felt really crap being treated like a child and I often confronted the tutor and the other staff member about this as I found it embarrassing to say the least. I was told as another poster has pointed out it was to keep the student levels up to keep the course going and to inspire the younger students.
You have a voice here op if your not comfortable speak to the non member of staff and the course tutor and explain what has made you uncomfortable and that it feels like you were targeted when no other students were. Some members of staff are arseholes to be sure but some are amazing and I'm sure you can sort this out so in future they think before doing something like this again.

SlugsWon · 26/10/2024 11:46

I've done online CPD which is not accredited, but you get a certificate of attendance - I don't think this is any different

SirChenjins · 26/10/2024 11:51

Awww - a wee certificate at our age is nice! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a certificate - usually it’s a very boring email confirming that I did indeed attend the course I signed up for like the big grown up girl I am.

I would take yourself off to Home Bargains and buy a frame for it that you can decorate with lots of glittery stickers 😊

I went to a class a few years ago relating to relaxation and Tai Chi. It was funded under a local government well-being strand. Obviously they had to provide various evidence as part of the funding requirements.

Prior to starting we had to complete a long form which included listing our hopes and expectations of the course, our objective in taking it, etc, etc, etc. At the start of each class we had to revisit it and fill in addition sections. At the end of each class we had to complete a detailed feedback form and express how we'd felt during our session and how it had met our objectives.

I do understand why as I've worked on funded projects myself in the past but it was such a pain. Everyone there was recently retired and just wanted to do a bit of exercise and meet like minded others.

I feel reasonably confident no-one ever reviewed those forms and they remain in a file in an office somewhere.

Getonwitit · 26/10/2024 12:03

On the adult education course i attended not only were we given our certificates, we had a celebration supper and they wanted to take photo's for the council magazine. I left before the fun started.

CrispyCrumpets · 26/10/2024 12:05

You should ask your Mum to take a photo of you holding it and put it on Facebook for Grandma to like

Actually you would be surprised. Government funded providers are required to report the stats from those forms, sessions be observed and inspected, including random reviews of paperwork.

Do they do "star of the week" as well?
