Just had parents evening and for the first time I've been told that my ds is not expected in reading. I want to support him at home, he loves duo lingo maths and I wondered if anyone can recommend a similar game / app to support with spelling?

I'm not sure why you're asking for recommendations for spelling apps if he isn't at the expected level in reading. Wouldn't it be better to focus on his reading?

Sorry my error I meant spelling. His reading is OK!!

You could try Nessy? It's not free but it is good!

Did the teacher not offer any advice on how to do this? Without using apps? If your child is already struggling with a teacher he probably needs more input form an adult, not less.

Crazyeight · 26/10/2024 10:02

I wouldn't bother with apps. I would download the spelling sheets for his year group and go through a few a week.

I like to do random tests, like if they want a biscuit , yes if you can spell biscuit.

What is he struggling with for spelling? Is it his phonetically knowledge or exception words? If he learns them can he use them in his work? Does he know the words required for the previous years? What is his reading age? Spelling is often a year or so behind reading.

Id go right back to the beginning and work on the sounds of the alphabet, then phase 1,2. If your child is distracted by visual info use paper or print out a sound mat and keep practicing. A quiet environment, no other white noise and 10 mins per day of relaxed practice. Go outside with chalks, make words out of sticks, leaves, stones etc, play doh etc etc. Spend lots of time on the single sounds then make sure she knows how to ‘blend’. Don’t overdo it and make it fun. Apps aren’t always the best way to learn, you need muscle memory, visual memory and active movements.

What year is he in?

Has the teacher said whether the problem is applying phonics, not remembering key words or not applying spelling rules?

Rollama is fun for SPAG. I've used the web version but I think there's an app.

Just realised that I hadn't read the title properly. I see he's 7 so presumably year 2 or 3.

Thank you everyone some really helpful suggestions here. His teacher wasn't overly helpful she just asked if the infant school had said anything and I said no and she just said she wanted to make me aware. I asked her how to work together to support him and she said she would give him some homework after half term!

My 7 year old likes the Twinkl Spelling app. It has all the national curriculum spellings and lots of different ways to practice them.

If you're happy to pay, spelling shed is really good. DS's school has a paid subscription but you can get one as a parent. He's in year 6 now but has used it all the way through from reception.

Another one, which might be a bit basic but worth a shot is teach your monster to read.
