What age did your children stop playing with toys?

Almost 10yo hasn't got a single toy on her Christmas list.

Is that it now?

Yes. It's around 10 yo.

K0OLA1D · 25/10/2024 12:59

My DS1 stopped around 8 or 9. He hasn't really got much of an imagination and preferred to play out, football, bike etc. His younger brother is nearly 11 and all he wants is lego and FNAF toys! They're all different

AHFBridport · 25/10/2024 13:01

Dd1 was about that age while dd2 carried on asking for collectible minifigures and creative/making type toys for another year or two. Nephew is 12 and still v keen on Lego and board games so it does vary.

I do have an older DC (almost 12) and he's still into lego in a big way. Building and playing with.

Just feels so young to not be excited by any toys.

my daughter irritatingly wanted quite an expensive teen-type doll for her tenth birthday, I caved in but it was headed for landfill (strictly speaking being passed down to a younger cousin) within weeks of being taken out of the box.

MuggleMe · 25/10/2024 13:16

@Crunchymum what does she have on her list? (from another mum of a 10yo girl)

stormmclean · 25/10/2024 13:18

My 14 year old still plays with lego and my 10 year old hasn't wanted a toy since he was about 5 - so it really depends on the child.

Newsenmum · 25/10/2024 13:18

What else are they doing at 10?

motherboredd · 25/10/2024 13:22

11 for mine.

Livinginaclock · 25/10/2024 13:27

About 9-10, but then I bought her the lego Millennium Falcon when she was 21 and she loved it.
I don't really see that as a toy though.

@Crunchymum what does she have on her list? (from another mum of a 10yo girl)

It's a pretty sad list to be honest.

Hot water bottle
Water bottle for school that doesn't leak (😪)
Scalp massager
Pyjamas

She said its not her full list but said there aren't any toys she wants.

She does a lot of physical stuff (ballet, football, swimming and gymnastics) plus she loves to draw / colour and most other types of crafts. We bake together as well. She also enjoys to write stories and plays. She isn't as keen on reading as her brother though.

We have all the board games and my older 2 are allowed to "play out" together at the local park.

DC2 also has a bike, scooter and roller skates.

Her Sylvanian Families haven't seen the light of day for a good 6 months and her expensive dolls from last year only come out so she can wash and cut their hair 😮

My youngest is 9 and still plays with toys, and is asking for toys for Christmas.

I think around 10/year 6 is when it stops, my eldest is 13 and definitely doesn't, although she did play with Lego and craft stuff until maybe more like 11/12 kind of age

BebbanburgIsMine · 25/10/2024 13:46

My daughters are both adults now, and I can't remember the exact age, but both definitely still played with dolls at 13/14.

I was the same, 10 seems so young to not play with toys anymore.

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 25/10/2024 13:50

DS is 11 - VR games/new quest, craft stuff, AirPods and Lego is his list

DH is 34 - Lego and Samsung AirPod equivalent

I think it's a boy thing

Mcginty57 · 25/10/2024 13:52

Around 9/10.

00deed1988 · 25/10/2024 13:53

My 13yo still gets Lego but more to build and then display. My 10yo still plays with lego and loves FNAF and gets the figures and plays with them. Redid their room in the summer and did a clear out, all the other toys were evicted by them!

Froggob · 25/10/2024 13:58

One of my sons is 13 and still wants and plays with toys! Luckily he’s got younger cousins who he likes to play with and so has a good ‘excuse’ to still have toys. He likes sports and gaming too but his Christmas list could pass for an 8 year olds!
The older 2 stopped a lot earlier-around 9/10

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2024 14:03

I reckon crafts are pretty much equivalent to Lego/other construction type systems - not really 'toys' but rather media for expressing creativity and developing skills. My DDs 'toys' at this sort of stage tended to be things like electronics kits.

popandchoc · 25/10/2024 14:06

My eldest was around 10 .
Youngest is 9 and only really plays with her dolls .

Blankscreen · 25/10/2024 14:09

My dd is 11 (just)and toys have definitely slipped off the wanted list.

She wants to get rid of her Our Generation dolls.

She quite like squishmellows but you don't really play with them and I will probably get her a Lego set so she has something to do.

She likes clay beads, art stuff and has taught herself to crochet

Her very recent birthday list was a white fox tracksuit, a real Stanley water bottle (bucket one so it's doesn't leak), some clear mascara and a LOT of bits for her hobby.

Violetcake · 25/10/2024 14:11

My niece was asking for an iphone, make up, skincare and clothes by the time she was 7 - 8 and seemed done with toys by 7 which I think is kind of sad. She's 10 now and wants new balance Trainers and make up palettes for Christmas and her mum has just put a load of art stuff and craft kits into the charity shop as she simply isn't interested.

At 10 I was still getting some toys although I was getting really into crafts, art, reading and music by that age. I remember getting a calligraphy set when I was 10 and it was the best thing ever!

Different times though!

Livinginaclock · 25/10/2024 15:04

@Violetcake
I'm 46 and went to my first concert, age 10, Bros, I was a massive Brosette so I really don't think times have changed that much.

As I say in my post I was really into music at 10 (we are the same age now although I was into Kate Bush, Enya, and was very much not into Bros although I remember girls in my class that were). I wasn't all that keen on getting clothes and make up. I was getting creative stuff and books and Id say even the brosettes were getting similar along with their bros cassettes not essentially the same things that an 18 or even 22 year old asks for but these days so many kids want the exact same stuff a woman of 20 + would ask for higher end skincare and make up, perfume, white fox fashion, uggs, Stanley cups, iPhone etc.
I think it is a bit different now especially ast the switch from toys to fashion etc can start at 7 or 8 years old. I think most kids at that age in the 80s were getting toys not tubs of bum bum cream.

Livinginaclock · 25/10/2024 15:38

I don't even know what bum bum cream is!
