Ah ffs, half my electric is off

Just came home and found that I have no lights in the kitchen, bathroom or hall. None of the plugs are working either. Have one working plug in the living room and the bedroom and living room lights are working. My heating/hot water is also off. Switched everything off that I can (including the boiler) , and it's still tripping off.

Really hoping it's not a massive pita to fix!

Just what I needed after an already crap day 🙃🙃😡

Have you worked out what's tripping everything yet?

QuestionableMouse · 24/10/2024 20:11

Nope! I literally have one plug and one light on. Weirdly everything is off in the kitchen apart from my fridge!

I genuinely have no idea.

Have you checked the fuse box?

shellyleppard · 24/10/2024 20:13

@QuestionableMouse unplug everything and plug back in one at a time till you find the culprit??? Have you checked your fuse box in case one of the breakers has tripped??

LIZS · 24/10/2024 20:13

Turn all the fuse switches off then put back on one by one to see which trips.

Ottobeak · 24/10/2024 20:14

Start with anything plugged in under the sink. This happened to me when there was a leak and water had got into the socket under there.

Balloonhearts · 24/10/2024 20:14

Something has tripped it. Go round unplug everything then flip the trip switch back and start flipping switches back one at a time. If all goes well start plugging things back in till you find what tripped it.

TickingAlongNicely · 24/10/2024 20:15

Look for leaks.. when we had a blocked pipe, water got into a plug socket and tripped out half our house

I don't have a plug under the sink.

Fuse box

It's probably something stupid like a charger. Throw the switches back on and start plugging stuff back on. Once whatever it is trips again, you know what it was and can just leave that one breaker switched off and get the rest of the house back on.

QuestionableMouse · 24/10/2024 20:23

It's the sockets in the bedroom I think, which is really annoying because I only one one double plug in there. 😡

What's plugged into it?

QuestionableMouse · 24/10/2024 20:27

Nothing atm.

Usually an extension lead so I can plug the lamp and my charger in.

Have you got everything running again? It will be a breaker on the circuit board. As others have said, turn them on and then try to isolate the fault

sometimes this can happen as a one off and you may never know what triggered it

QuestionableMouse · 24/10/2024 20:46

It's the one fucking plug I could really do with working. I'm really not feeling good and just want to go to bed but both my phone and tablet need charging. Totally fed up atm 😡☹️

In that case it's probably something more fundamental. Any chance it could've got wet? If not we once had this and initially thought something had chewed through wires under the floor ( we had a mouse problem at the time), but it ended up being far worse. We knew the wiring wasn't new but hadn't realised it was the original 1930s wiring that had just finally worn through. Ended up having to get a complete rewire. Hopefully yours is caused by one of the first two issues.

LIZS · 24/10/2024 21:01

Probably the extension lead, have you tried plugging a charger in direct.

Littletreefrog · 24/10/2024 21:05

How have you come to the conclusion a socket in the bedroom with nothing plugged in has flipped the fuse for other rooms/lights? Go to the fuse box and flip it back up and see if it stays on. It could be a light bulb or a socket in one of the affected rooms. Hopefully the fuses are labelled.

EighteenOhFive · 24/10/2024 21:07

My parents used to have some sockets that were on all the time. Switching them off did nothing. So maybe try unplugging everything, not just switching off.

Because as long as it's turned off everything else works.

Ah you must have some oddly wired circuits. Have you tried using the socket without the extension? Or using the extension in a socket that definitely works?

Balloonhearts · 24/10/2024 21:18

Can't you leave your phone and tablet downstairs to charge? Or run an extension from the landing? Maybe it's the extension rather than the socket itself that's the problem.

I only have a double socket in the bedroom, nothing else. I'm in a flat so no landing, no plug sockets in the hall, and the extension lead I have won't reach to the bedroom from the kitchen.

I want them charged because I want to use them so I'm currently sitting on the floor by the one working socket.

All I know is that if I switch that socket on the power goes off. Just really wish it had been a different socket!

Think I've found the culprit! Scared the absolute crap out of me because it started fizzing and stinking like burning plastic. It's a brand new cable too!
