Sex trafficking in the music industry - finally getting its me too moment

For years and years men in positions of fame, wealth and power have got away with their abhorrent treatment of others. Finally in 2024 these men are starting to get called out. Is this Diddy case just the tip of the iceberg? Do you think the music industry is finally changing and the worshipping culture of these celebrities and what they can get away with will change?!

There have been decades of people keeping quiet and no one calling out the behaviour. Security guards and crew who kept quiet. Victims too scared to speak up. Why now?

Well having looked at some of the reportiing about the life style and some of the accusations against Coombs - and seen the horrendous video footage of him kicking and beating up his girlfriend- it's disgusting it's taken so long for justice to finally seem to be catching up on him. I can only assume now the behaviour is so extreme and overt it's now more difficult for the justice system to ignore.
I think the worrying thing is the behaviour exhibited by powerful and rich men is actually envied by a lot of men rather than reviled. These court cases don't really change the attitude of men towards women or change the belief that money allows you to do anything you want.

I think you're being very optimistic. After the Savile investigation, for example, people couldn't believe how he had got away with it for so long. They couldn't understand how everyone had just stood by and let him molest children.

Loads of people knew about Weinstein, Epstein, Al Fayed, R Kelly, P Diddy and no doubt other powerful abusers will crawl out of plain sight the woodwork. They all had enablers and their crimes were an open secret.

In order for this kind of behaviour to stop there need to be clear whistle blowing policies and strong police action. I would love it if people who knowingly collude with them were also prosecuted.

Nothing will change.

How many men have been charged with offences related to Epstein and his filthy island?

It won't change until women (or young gay men potentially) refuse to engage with these people. I'm not victim blaming, just being realistic that as long as there's a source of young people desperate to be noticed in the industry, willing to do anything to be "found" these men will take advantage. Education, installing self worth and calling out predatory behaviour and all really important but I don't think you can completely stop it until the would be victims refuse

You are victim blaming. P Diddy drugged and raped people and was a violent abuser, I believe children as young as 9 were targeted.

Epstein trafficked women and children, people who are trafficked can't give consent. R Kelly held women hostage and abused them. You can't consent to abuse.

In the case of Weinstein, he used his power and connections to assault with impunity. No one was willing to turn him down in case they never worked again. Again Al Fayed was a powerful boss who preyed on his staff.

Does it not feel in the last few years more people are standing up to this kind of behaviour and not tolerating it though? There will always be a minority but are times not changing. More and more men are being rightly so arrested and their years of horrific abuse exposed. This did not seem to be happening before. Where was this intervention 20 years ago?!

I often think that people have been so worried about not being relevant, cancelled or in the right circles they were willing to throw away their own morals to accept behaviour that never should have been ignored. I don’t think the young of today are as tolerant to putting up with this regardless of a persons power. I do feel like because of social media and technology that times are somewhat starting to change. Maybe I am being optimistic but I see it so much in my daughter and her friends how they are speaking out and aware of what a misogynistic society we still live in.

I agree. I also think a lot of parents are now much more aware and simply wouldn’t let their kids into some of the situations we’ve seen happen. Not all of course but still.

Also it can take generations for bad habits or behaviour to change. I’ve been watching the Bling ring doc on Netflix and it was horrifying what the mother on there thought was acceptable for her teens to be doing. But she said she did it at that age so 🤷🏼‍♀️ but the teens are like what the hell was she thinking. So their children won’t have the same lifestyle.

A quick question- what is your daughter and her friends' attitude to 'the trans issue'?

If it is entirely that men must not, under any circumstances, violate female spaces, great. They get it.

But if it's 'but, #bekind!'- this is how all what you've stated happened.

I am a feminist to my very bones. BUT, in my early 60s, now, I can tell you that many of the women caught up in 'all this' were willing participants.

Young women today who think us old TERFs are cruel, bigoted harridans might be considered the 'but no one called it out!' crowd of 2035.

But I can assure you I had plenty of friends, in 1980, aged17-20, perfectly happy to climb aboard the tour bus of B-grade bands.
