Are you sure he doesn't want a Switch? Or is he into retro gaming?

Berga · 23/10/2024 19:25

Agree with PP this will be retro gaming, but if he wants one, the Wii is much better. The Wii U was short-lived really, and has an additional screen that you could play some games on without a TV. It was an in-between the wii and the switch, both of which are much better in their own right.

Both are quite old and new games aren’t made for either of them. The newer version is the Switch.

I have a soft spot for original Wii as it was my kids first console (they’re early 20’s now) and we played lots of games as a family. Controls were so simple which was great for DS1 who has a learning disability. He actually still has a WiiU which he plays occasionally.

We have both as husband is into retro games! He says go for the Wii U as it will play both Wii and Wii U games, whereas the Wii only plays those games! I still use the Wii fit every so often!

He does not want a switch ? Unless it does the same? Basically he was was watching the chip monks and they were playing a game and I looked and it was a Wii that was bring played . He wants to be able to stand up and use his body to play rather than just sitting down just gaming.

Ok he sounds young. The Wii is 17 years old now. If he's young I'd get him one and a bunch of second hand games to play around with.

The Switch is Nintendo's current gaming system and you can also play those kinds of games.

The technology has moved on a lot in 17 years but he sounds around 6 years old so a Wii will do him fine as a first console.

@Anonymous911 It sounds like he saw the original Wii from the 2000s, which came with a wii-mote and a nunchuk style controller, and had lots of games taking advantage of motion controls since it was a big selling point of that console. The Wii U had a tablet-style controller instead, so this isn't what he saw.

However, the Wii is now an outdated system - new games stopped being made a long time ago since Nintendo have made two newer consoles since then. You would have to buy everything second hand, afaik.

The latest console is the Switch and new games are still being made. The Switch does technically have motion controls but games do not take the same advantage of it as they did back when the Wii was out as motion controls were the big thing then. Motion control games are out there if you look for them, though.

I would explain this to him, get him to maybe watch some Youtube videos about motion controls on each system, and let him decide which he is more interested in. You don't want to spend ages tracking down an old Wii, controllers and games on eBay/marketplace if he doesn't realise it is an outdated system and he ends up disappointed.

You can pick up a wii, balance board and a bunch of games in charity shops for about £20-30.

Make sure your tv has the right connections in the back to plug it into though, as it's such an old console it doesn't have modern connectors like usb or hdmi. Although you should be able to buy some kind of adapter.

You can definitely buy adapters. But you need to make sure you get one going in the right direction, as SCART-to-hdmi and hdmi-to-scart are different beasts. Both are widely available on eBay and aren't expensive.
