Found out NHS flu jab only for over 65s this year

I’ve been waiting for my appointment, had the jab on the NHS past couple of years, as I’m 55. But when I checked it’s now over 65s unless health conditions.

I really really do not want flu, single parent, do lots of driving, only paid if I work, so I’ve booked a private one, but thought would make other people aware.

Unless i am just a dimwit and everyone knows this anyway 😳😀

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/10/2024 14:32

Usually free over 50

I got mine a couple of weeks ago

I'm 51

MmePick · 23/10/2024 14:33

Oh, maybe just Scotland?

Though I did look at UK guidance, maybe got it wrong.

if so, it’s even more annoying given we pay more tax up here!

It used to be for all over 50 but is now only for certain people between 50 and 64 e.g some medical conditions

dementedpixie · 23/10/2024 14:35

I was invited last year as it was from age 50 in Scotland.

Looks like it's age 65 this year unless there's an underlying condition

Bramshott · 23/10/2024 14:36

Looks like it has gone back to pre-Covid eligibility which is over 65s only (and certain medical conditions). Maybe some trusts haven't quite realised that yet!

Normallynumb · 23/10/2024 14:36

In my area( Wiltshire) it's Over 60's
I'm 59 and got a raised eyebrow before I said I was in a vulnerable group
It's £18.99 here otherwise.
Maybe look on your Surgery website?

Lulu1919 · 23/10/2024 14:37

55 here and I've got to pay for mine !!

Skunkaniseed · 23/10/2024 14:37

It's not. If you meet the eligibility criteria you will be offered it.

gamerchick · 23/10/2024 14:37

You can always pay. It's not that expensive.

LostittoBostik · 23/10/2024 14:37

Yes i am younger but was previously considered high risk and got both flu and Covid. This year I don't qualify for either. Just paid £20 for my flu today but Covid is £100! I don't know if I can stretch to it

Ps without any particular health conditions

I'm London and WITH conditions (but in 40s) and I didn't qualify this year.

I wonder if they're doing it practice by practice. That's shit if so.

Nope, I'm London

I bet this has been devolved to practices or CCGs. Ffs.

If you read the link I posted it tells you which conditions make you eligible. If you have one of them then contact your GP.

Zilla1 · 23/10/2024 14:40

Did the PPs who received it when under 65 and without the relevant health conditions get it from their GP or a pharmacy?

LostittoBostik · 23/10/2024 14:40

I did. I called my GP who said only asthmatics who had been hospitalised in the last year were getting it

Citrusandginger · 23/10/2024 14:40

The NHS in England is 65 or qualifying health conditions. Some people are called by their GP surgeries because they are on a recall list. Childhood asthma is a good example of this. Once on a list, always on a list. Officially it's only people with severe asthma that are included but most HCP will still administer if people who've been called turn up.

Normallynumb · 23/10/2024 14:40

Just checked and it's free to over 65s

Skunkaniseed · 23/10/2024 14:40

The flu vaccine is recommended for people with certain long-term health conditions, including:

conditions that affect your breathing, such as asthma (needing a steroid inhaler or tablets), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis
heart conditions, such as coronary heart disease or heart failure
chronic kidney disease
liver disease, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis
some conditions that affect your brain or nerves, such as Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy
diabetes or Addison's disease
a weakened immune system due to a condition such as HIV or AIDS, or due to a treatment such as chemotherapy or steroid medicine
problems with your spleen, such as sickle cell disease, or if you've had your spleen removed
a learning disability
being very overweight – a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above
Speak to your GP surgery or specialist if you have a health condition and you're not sure if you're eligible for the flu vaccine.
