Can it be chicken pox with just one spot?

My youngest has woken up with a massive spot on her face, just one. I’m keeping her off school as she’s had impetigo a couple of times and it looks like it could be that and the school will only send her home anyway. However i’m pretty certain it’s not impetigo as the spot looks more watery than the yellow you would see with impetigo. It looks to me like a chicken pox blister.

But it’s literally one spot. She feels fine, looks slightly paler than usual but nothing that makes her look ill and is otherwise fine. She was complaining of a sore throat over the weekend which wasn’t red when I looked and didn’t come to anything.

I’m between wanting get her to the pharmacist or GP and not wanting to take her anywhere in case it is in fact chicken pox.

Just wait a few hours... if it is chicken pox, lots of spots will soon appear!

DD only had 5 spots but they were big.

DD1 had less than 5 spots IIRC (it was definitely in single figures), so I don't see why just 1 wouldn't be possible. I believe there's a higher chance of getting it again with such a mild outbreak, but DD1 is now 10yo and so far, so good.

I do know a little boy who only had a couple of spots. His sister had it, and it was going through his nursery and the spots looked just the same so his parents were pretty sure he had it too, just very mildly.

But more likely, if it is chicken pox, more will pop up by this afternoon.

My husband only had 1 or 2 spots when he had it as a child. My MIL only knew it was chicken pox as his sister also had it.

Just as a warning he had it again last year quite badly when our children had it as he hadn't built up immunity.

Could be the start of hand, foot and mouth disease. Watch out for more spots in those areas (and bum). Also sores in the mouth. My 4 year old has it. Not pleasant. ☹️

Is it a blister? With my youngest I noticed a blister when dressing her. Just one. I figured I'd know soon enough. Sure enough, more spots appeared over the course of the day. I did think chicken pox usually started on the trunk though? I may be wrong.

My youngest had one spot on her back, next morning just the one so sent her to school. That evening she came out in loads of spots so keep an eye on it.
Think they are more likely to be on the back / stomach to start with.

It’s definitely more like a blister rather than a large spot. No sign of anything else so far and she seems well in herself (in-fact she’s annoyed I’ve kept her home because they were getting a Halloween film today) but whatever it is it’s not just a large spot (as in a hormonal spot or white head) and it looks ready to pop at any minute.

Pretty sure it isn’t hand foot and mouth. Still not 100% convinced it’s not impetigo as both times she had had that she didn’t have a typical presentation, just one large spot which burst and went crusty quickly. The spot she has today is in almost the exact same place she had her first bout of impetigo, and that led to ocular cellulitis and needed IV antibiotics and a night in hospital.

I had it as a kid and only got one spot to start with. The next day another one appeared, and it was another day after that before they all started to show themselves. I still have the scars from the first two spots, they were gross monsters.

New question for all of you who took the time to answer yesterday. Can it be chicken pox even if you feel well?

The spot she had yesterday popped by lunchtime and turned yellow & crusty so went to the pharmacist who gave us cream for impetigo. Today a new spot has appeared, right beside the first one. I’ve attached a picture and I’m almost certain it’s chicken pox, which she’s not had yet.

I’ll be phoning the GP in the morning because I really have no idea what the hell it is, but could it be chicken pox even if she is is well? She has no temperature, not feeling ill at all, she’s 100% normal.

Neither of my daughters had any symptoms except the spots

HashBrownandBeans · 25/10/2024 07:30

My son had it with just two spots when he was one. They both deeply scarred. We knew it was chicken pox because he got it from his older sister who was covered from head to toe!
