Proud of myself learning to drive in my 30s

Anybody else learnt to drive later in life? I did it at 18 and failed once and never did it again. It's taken me a long time to build up the courage and save the money with having a few children but I'm not afraid to say I'm bloody proud of myself that I'm finally doing it! Passed my theory today 🥳

Well done! I’m similar to you, failed at 18 then life and children got in the way. I ended up learning again at 34 as my son was going to a special school that was about 25 miles away and I needed to know I could get there if he needed me. That was about 10 years ago now and it’s absolutely liberating getting in the car and going wherever I want, whenever I want. I can’t imagine not being able to drive now, we used to rely on trains and buses but we live fairly rurally and it was hugely limiting. Keep going x one plus is that insurance will be much cheaper at your age!

@HamHand ohhh I love this well done to you! I'm super excited to get on the road, so fed up of taxis and busses! X

Well done OP 🥳 same here, passed when pregnant at 30 😁

Sounds really silly bragging about it on a forum but I haven't told anyone IRL except my husband as I don't want the pressure so I'm just excited 😂

Good on you OP! 👍
That's wonderful, congrats, you do right to be proud of yourself.
You'll be so happy to have this skill, very liberating and useful too.
My mum got her licence to drive when she was 54, she was so pleased with herself, and we didn't see her for dust! lol!

I learnt to drive when I was 52. We lived in Oxford for many years and loads of people don't drive there. Bus service is brilliant into city center and bicycles are every where. However moving to Wales and a very rural village, was another thing altogether. Remember telling my family GP, we will be having two busses a week, he almost fell off his chair. I Had to drive and it was a real challenge. Narrow country lanes, with tractors and cattle coming towards me! I never came to enjoy driving. I do admire good , confident drivers. It's a skill well worth having. But I prefer a good bus service or walking everywhere. Which is why we now live in a town.

Thought I'd jump on to update, I passed my test! Sooooo happy. I was meant to do it in January but had to cancel as I was in hospital extremely unwell!! First morning I can jump in the car on my own, a little nervous!!

Congratulations, OP! You should feel proud of yourself. There's a different set of challenges with learning later in life.

I'm learning to drive and a decade older than you. It's been a long, slow process for me due to having to learn around work and childcare. The cost involved means I had to take a break from lessons for a while but I'm back at it now. Hopefully not too long and I'll be celebrating too.

Enjoy your new found freedom!
