29F - are kwells travel pills (hyoscine hydrobromide) addictive?

Are Kwells travel pills addictive?

I take kwells travel pills (hyoscine hydrobromide) for car sickness on long journeys as and when I go on them, which isn’t often.

I noticed they help me sleep and I’ve been taking one to help me sleep through and as normally otherwise I’m up with urine retention all night.

I’ve been taking one a night for the past seven nights to sleep.

I’ve tried to stop taking them but my quality of sleep is rubbish when I don’t, it’s like I have to.

I don’t get any sort of high- it just gives me an amazing sleep.

My partner says I will become reliant on them to sleep and that’s why I struggle without them.

I’ve been taking them to sleep for about a week now, one a night. I tried to stop two nights ago but I barely slept. So I had another last night.

I’m a recovering codeine addict on methadone treatment and I really don’t want to get addicted to something again.

Never heard of hyoscine being addictive.

But Methadone for codeine?

Methadone is far more addictive-people get stuck on it for decades.

This is why I was going to put a disclaimer and extra info on here.

I was on a massive amount of codeine, weaning off it is not something they do here and suboxone didn’t work for me for various reasons. I went on 45ml of methadone and have since weaned down to 14ml, still weaning down. It’s taken a few years but not decades. Far less than 10 years.

methadone can, and is used for codeine addiction. There are plenty of sources online. It has been a lifeline for me and kept me off codeine, I have never relapsed.

this isn’t what this post is about so I won’t be answering any more comments on the methadone/codeine topic

They're not addictive in themselves, but any behaviour which means you feel you have to take them is an addiction. Try to replace them with herbal sleep aid tablets and magnesium capsules. These both help with sleep and aren't dangerous. They're also not addictive either, but you'd be better off taking these than a medication. Hyoscine can also have side effects which you probably won't want.

Unfortunately I can’t take either because I am epileptic and they affect
my anti epileptic medication.

It's recommended you don't take Kwells if you have epilepsy anyway. The magnesium shouldn't be a problem though. Try magnesium threonate or glycinate.

Incidentally, the Kwells can exacerbate urinary retention as well. Did you mean urinary frequency?

both! urinary retention which I’ve had for years well before I took kwells. I thought my Prozac was causing it but I’ve been off that for months so no idea. I’m overweight so perhaps it’s that, also could be anxiety as it doesn’t happen during the day. I struggle to push my pee out. Had the frequency at night years before the kwells too.

kwells are fine with my epilepsy meds I’ve checked w doctor

You shouldn’t really take them for a purpose they’re not intended for unless a doctor has told you to anyway, especially not on a regular basis.
If you taking large amounts of codeine before I would be wary of taking anything not prescribed by a doctor regularly that’s going to put extra pressure on your kidneys.
You need to see a doctor about the insomnia. It’s not right to have to take something in order to sleep regularly.
I think regardless of whether they are addictive this is not a good behaviour for you to engage in if you’re in recovery.

im not on codeine anymore. I am on methadone treatment.

i had my body checked (liver, kidneys, stomach) when the doctor realised how much codeine and ibuprofen I was taking and everything was fine thankfully.
