If you are good at baking...

How do you stop yourself eating your own delicious cakes and biscuits (and/or the mixture as you go)?
I've recently decided to learn to bake-and I'm surprising myself with how good I am at it. But I've also gained about ten pounds, because I'm essentially getting high on my own supply! I've basically got no will power.
Is there such a thing as lockable cake tins?

I'm finding the same thing OP, picked up baking again whilst on mat leave, but I'm piling on the weight as I'm baking multiple times in a week for fun.

I've just ordered mini tart tins and a small cake tin, with the aim of only making very small quantities at a time. I'm not what you'd call a naturally precise or dainty person, so could do with practicing a more "refined" style anyways😅

I have this problem too, but fortunately I have three DC who are even greedier than I am, so they help me out. Grin

CoastalCalm · 22/10/2024 09:58

I tend to make tray bakes and freeze portions

I used to bake. And now I don't. Much slimmer. There you are.

BigDahliaFan · 22/10/2024 09:59

I've stopped baking for this reason, I only bake now when I know there will be other people around to eat it....Had to stop making sourdough bread as I just ate it all...

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 22/10/2024 10:02

Sometimes when my children and I bake, we wrap up individual portions, put a ribbon round them and a note, and drop them round to people we know - especially elderly people, or those who are having a hard time.

In the interests of honesty, I must admit that most of the time we all eat twice what should and then my husband and I scoff the remainder late at night, which is less ideal...

Chemenger · 22/10/2024 10:04

I really enjoy baking but we don’t eat cakes and biscuits so I very seldom do it. It’s a bit of a paradox. Christmas is my only big baking time now.

DoublePeonies · 22/10/2024 10:08

I have 2 teens.
If I really need to eat less, I make stuff I'm not as fond of (eg oaty stuff) which the hollow legged ones still eat in massive quantities!

Devillishlooloo · 22/10/2024 10:09

I’ve had to stop baking. We just eat it all and then get fat fatter.

InMySpareTime · 22/10/2024 10:10

We have several local charities that are very happy to pass on excess baking to homeless/vulnerable/asylum-seeking people locally, and church always appreciates extra biscuits, I'm never short of opportunities to palm off cake!

Reallybadidea · 22/10/2024 10:13

Now that it's DH and me at home I take my baking into work and bring a slice or two home for DH. The trouble is that there are a few bakers in my department so it doesn't help me limit my intake of cake that much!

BeMintBee · 22/10/2024 10:14

I don’t bake for this reason. Made carrot cake, lemon cake and a Victoria sponge at the weekend for a family afternoon tea get together. Loads left and I’ve been eating it ever since. Not even cutting a slice just back and forth with a fork every 5 minutes 😳 like somehow it doesn’t count if it’s only one forkful at a time.

Changeyourfuckingcar · 22/10/2024 10:14

I tend to try and limit myself to times when I know I’ll either have visitors or I will be the visitor, and can dole out cake to everyone else! We see our families a lot, so I still have lots of opportunities to bake. I used to bring cakes into work, but I’m self employed now and so is DH so that’s a non-starter too 😂

Ultimate girl math ;)

I tend to avoid making things I know I'll scoff. So rarely make chocolate fudge cake or lemon drizzle these days 😭 But will do lots of carrot cakes/flapjacks which gives me a bit more willpower (still eat loads though!)

Stretchedresources · 22/10/2024 10:22

I read this as 'barking' and wondered what sort of weirdo you were 😂.

RudolphsDashing · 22/10/2024 11:02

I've decided to only make things I don't like 😁

Same. I don't really have a sweet tooth so I don't find it difficult to avoid very sweet cakes etc!

Sgtmajormummy · 22/10/2024 11:52

When I was on a low carb diet I used to bake elaborate sweet stuff as a labour of love for the others to make up for the daily regime, knowing I couldn’t eat it.

Nowadays I stick to simple things that I’m not a fan of, like jam tart or muffins so I don’t get the urge.

But if there’s freshly baked bread I lose all my self control!

KohlaParasaurus · 22/10/2024 11:56

Like several previous posters, I've almost stopped baking now that I don't have a houseful of people to help me to eat it or a workplace to take it to. I sometimes make a cake or a batch of scones just to make sure I still can, but it'll be something freezable. It was never a problem when I had a houseful of DC and DSC.

DH and I still eat cakes but they're an eating-out treat now.

FaintlyMacabre · 22/10/2024 12:03

This is a big problem for me, especially as my DH is coeliac and diabetic and my children are so ridiculously fussy that almost anything beyond chocolate or lemon drizzle won’t be eaten.
I want to improve my skills and try different recipes but I’ve recently lost 10kg and really don’t want to regain it!

whosaidtha · 22/10/2024 12:13

I don't bake as much as I should. My husband is vegan so only he and the kids to eat it and I don't really want them eating 3 cupcakes each. But I bake at Christmas and birthdays. Already got my Christmas bakes planned.

hiredandsqueak · 22/10/2024 12:16

I love baking, I'm good at it too, however I don't like cake so friends and family eat it and I bake for bakes sales as well to get my fix.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/10/2024 12:17

I can bake and I love a bit of home made cake as much as the next person BUT I only bake for events, birthdays and other people. My days of having to bake for school cake sales have long since passed (thank goodness) but DH runs a hobby group which occasionally gets together for tea and cake afterwards, so I do bake for that (and hope it all gets eaten so it doesn't come home again!)

ItReallyWasAgathaAllAlong · 22/10/2024 12:17

Do you work in an office, OP? I only bake if I know I’m going to be in the office the following day. If I make brownies, I’ll keep two (one for me, one for DH) and package the rest up to bring to work with me where they’ll be inhaled in c. 2 nanoseconds.

I love baking but don’t do it often because I have a weight problem, have done really well in getting it under control finally, and I don’t trust myself to have cakes within reaching distance. You know that episode of Sex and the City where Miranda eats chocolate cake out of the bin? That would be me.

caringcarer · 22/10/2024 12:21

I only bake gingerbread cookies at Xmas because I have no will power and eat far too many of them. If I occasionally bake during the year it's generally to donate to school fayre or Scouts or similar.
