Why do I feel cold with no heating at this time of year when my thermostat says 21 degrees?

If it said 21 degrees in summer I would feel quite comfortable. Hence heating only set to come on if it goes below 19. I've overridden it now though!

Does anyone else experience this?

The difference in humidity makes a difference and autumnal damp temperatres feel cooler than their drier summer counterpart.

In my house, the floors are draughty and the air movements below knee height are cooler than the thermometer level by a degree or two. Oct-Apr, I regularly have icy feet which doesn't help.

Are you moving around or sitting still? I find it helps to do a bit of hoovering or go out for a walk.

HotTopicsWithImogen · 21/10/2024 22:11

@BogRollBOGOF I think the damp must be it. My floors aren't particularly cold as I have to have carpets as part of my lease agreement - I live in a flat.

@KeepScrapingBy too late for hoovering or walking now and I'm not that bothered; it was just something I noticed.

I agree with pp it will be the damp air. You could invest in a dehumidifier which will remove the damp so the air will feel warmer.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 21/10/2024 22:16

I was having this exact conversation today! We put it down to humidity but I’m not sure. Our living room was 21degrees and I needed a blanket, in summer I’d be in shorts!

MinnieOfThePinny · 21/10/2024 22:17

Dampness and tiredness can make me feel cold even when the house temperature at this time of the year reads 20C.

LadyChilli · 21/10/2024 22:17

My thermostat temperature is different to yours but otherwise I experience the same. I'm freezing at a temp I'd be quite happy with in summer. Over the last few years when I've not felt able to put the heating to a truly comfortable setting, I have noticed that I develop a tolerance as winter progresses. So now I need to turn the heating to 18 or even 19 or 20 at times, but by January I'll be ok with turning it up to 17 as a treat and rarely going above that.

Ginkypig · 21/10/2024 22:18

I agree! My living room says it’s 22 (rest of the house is 19-20) in the summer that was fine, comfortable in-fact but tonight I’m sitting in a big hoodie and my feet feel like blocks of ice!

Allotmenthelp · 21/10/2024 22:20

Yes me too, I thought it was just me. My heating said 20 but my fingers were numb. I hadn’t thought about the humidity.

HeddaGarbled · 21/10/2024 22:24

I don’t think they’re that accurate. General ball park but not to the exact degree. Ours seems to take a long time to kick in and then a long time to click off. Also, different rooms and even different parts of the same room will be warmer or colder depending on proximity to windows and doors and whether the sun’s shining in etc.

I’m a great believer in turning it up or down depending on how warm/cold you actually are rather than taking much notice of the numbers.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/10/2024 22:26

Weird I thought this exact thought tonight!

The house felt cool even though the thermostat said 21 degrees, I flicked the heating on for 20 mins.

HotTopicsWithImogen · 21/10/2024 22:27

Lol.

Mine's gone on tonight - 23 now and nice and warm.

My heating's always on from October - won't be tormenting myself.

HotTopicsWithImogen · 21/10/2024 22:39

To be clear, I don't switch mine off, it just didn't click on because the thermostat was registering temperature as 21.

Humid air feels colder, which explains the change in how you feel. Our weather station shows the interior humidity and temp as well as that outside, and the interior humidity has taken a leap upwards in the past few days. The heating is set to come on during its timed periods, but the stat is set at 18, and it hasn’t cut in for a couple of days because the house has stayed at 19 by itself, but it certainly feels chillier in here.
