How easy is it to move from freestanding dishwasher to built in?

Just that. We currently have a relatively new dishwasher, but are planning to get a new kitchen. I would like the kitchen to have a built in dishwasher (it wasn’t originally the plan but after seeing other people’s kitchens, I see how smart it looks.)

I can’t justify replacing the one I have when I get the new kitchen, so wondered whether I could buy the in built unit and save it to use when I replace my dishwasher in the future (ikea kitchen). Does this sound possible?

There shouldn’t be any issues with that, we did similar with our washing machine when it died a few months before we were planning to start on a new kitchen.

Mine is just a door that fits onto dishwasher so that's possible. But I'm
Not sure on sizing and whether if you had a freestanding one there at first the gap would then be too big for built in.

I got built in even though my stuff all still worked - I wasn't doing the kitchen again for years so wanted it to look as I wanted.

It's only a few hundred which in the scheme of a kitchen really isn't that much.....

How would the sizing work?

Can you sell the current one?

Built-in ones don't usually have handles on the front, so unless you're going to attach a door to it, there might be practicality issues.

Unless I've misunderstood what you are wanting to do?

If you are just wanting to leave a gap until your old dishwasher dies, I don't see why that wouldn't work?

You can often get a new door for your dishwasher from the manufacturer to make it useable as a built in (no handles, the operating controls need to be at the top and modern units have lights that reflect on the floor to tell you it ‘s on). If that’s not available then no you can’t have a built.

Yes we did this. Had a perfectly working dishwasher and at the time couldn't afford to replace so didnt get a built in one.

We saved a door to use form the utility....I hade that bloody door 17 years before using

Only thing we had to change was the plinth along the bottom so it continued across the bottom of the dishwasher

This is good news! Thank you.

I've just re read your OP. The built in dishwasher doesn't have a unit, it just fits between a 600mm gap the same as a freestanding one. I think it may of screwed in but OH can't remember

Just remember to get a spare door and plinth. Your kitchen fitters may even do a spare plinth for you with the cut out for the dishwasher
