There's three Grammar schools in Plymouth, 2 for girls (Devonport High for Girls & Plymouth High for Girls) and 1 for boys ( Devonport High for boys). Both are single sex schools up to GCSE's.

All are over subscribed.

Happy to answer anymore question that you have 🙂

3 grammar schools in torbay. 1 boys, 1 girls & 1 co ed. Boys is v hard to get into drawing pupils from as far away as Taunton. Girls recently graded Outstanding so expected to increase in difficulty. i believe full intake last year but some spaces in higher years. Co-ed in Churston very popular but slightly lower pass mark required.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 12:27

Thank you very much would you be able to give me ideas of villages that are nice I was looking at kingsbridge as I've heard that has a nice school thank you

In that area you also have Ivybridge Community College, a very good comp. Some people are sending their children there over the local grammars.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 13:23

high school next year? September 2025? has he sat the 11+ exam? it was in September. unfortunately if not, then you'll have missed entry to the torbay grammars.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/10/2024 14:32

As @StrawberryThief1930 says, if your dc is currently in year 6 then you’ve missed the 11+ exams for year 7 starters in September 2025

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 14:48

He has yes and passed it

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/10/2024 15:04

So which schools did he sit it for? I don’t live in the area but I’m sure my friends dd sat school specific 11+ exams in Devon a couple of years ago

meeeeeee1234 · 21/10/2024 15:05

My sister & I went to Churston Grammar, but that was many years ago. It had a good reputation when we were there.
A friend's child goes there at the moment, reports seem to be good.
If you lived in Brixham, Paignton or Torquay the bus routes are good to get to the Grammar school.

There’s no pass / fail in 11+. Each school is likely to have a different cut off score that gets a child offered a place depending on the applicants that year and their specific criteria.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 15:37

We actually live in Manchester at the moment and are moving down next year so I'm hoping he can transfer and not have to resit the 11+

It doesn't work like that - each area has its own 11+

🤦🏻‍♀️. Sorry op but that’s not how it works at all. You have missed the exam dates for the schools in area that you’re hoping to move to.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 16:04

O OK it states online that you can use 11+ nation wide but I'm guessing it depends on the school then

OP posts:
StrawberryThief1930 · 21/10/2024 16:14

unfortunately i don't think you'd get a space - heavily oversubscribed. They have hundreds more children sit the exam than actually get a space. then they run waiting lists.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/10/2024 16:28

I’m guessing you haven’t checked with the schools?

Where? Most are location specific.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 17:08

OK that's annoying I must have read it wrong 🙈

Maybe it said “test administered by a national firm” or similar - there are a couple of companies that prepare many of the tests for various areas, one is GL if I remember correctly

Both schools were Outstanding, boys lost it and are now Good, girls kept Outstanding in a recent inspection. Op why do you want your children in a grammar school instead of other good schools in Devon if location isn’t an issue.

Neither school is ideal and there are issues in both, the single sex thing being one. There is movement within the year but it depends year to year. Your child would have to sit the 11+ again to get a place but I doubt it would be a problem if he/ she has already done it once. If I had my time again I wouldn’t send a child to either of the Torquay schools for several reasons.

If you’re that fixed on grammar education i’d
look at the co ed options in Devon, assuming you’re sure your child is suited to that environment.

Holz11 · 21/10/2024 19:22

OK thank you very much I actually don't mind sending him to any school I juat wasn't really sure about the others that's all I will have a look at other schools that have been mentioned thank you very much
