Improving humble abode ( on a budget)

I really need to try and spruce the place up a bit. Not sure where to start.
Fuddled brain.
Can anybody suggest cheapish ways to do this?
Victorian terrace, not tiny but not large.
Thanks

Do you want to share a couple of photos of rooms that you'd like to improve?

Isonthecase · 20/10/2024 19:56

Quickest thing is a fresh coat of paint. I do a warmslightly off white (strong white or slaked lime colour match) all over because then you don't have to cut in.
Changing kitchen worktops is good if you're handy or oil if they're wood.
Replacing carpets - you can get offcuts to bring the cost right down.
Give everything a good clean and fix anything that needs it.
Then a few decorative bits from charity shops.

Thanks, I'll give that a try tomorrow maybe.

  1. Declutter And then Declutter again! - it makes the room look more spacious, clean and comfortable.
  2. Deep clean, lots of bugs come into our houses at this time of year
  3. Consider the layout of your furniture, rearranging it can make a big difference.
  4. Depending on the room, add a mirror (or two)
  5. Plants, a little greenery, helps bring the outside in and some plants are meant to improve air quality.
  6. Add an inexpensive rug.
  7. Then consider a fresh coat of paint.

Good Luck!

What is your budget?

MyEarringsAreGreen · 20/10/2024 20:48

Places like B and M and Home Bargains are good for cushions/accessories/storage baskets. But as others have said, a good clean and declutter is a good start. An off white like Dulux Timeless works everywhere and is lovely and soft.

Don't have a huge amount of clutter. Actually it's all a bit spartan, not at all cosy really.

Budget is prtically non existant so not sure how that works!!

No budget at all?

Face book marketplace for unused paint??

EclipseoftheHeart1 · 20/10/2024 21:23

@greenday16B join local freecyle groups.

I'm on several fb groups and on the some you would not believe what's offered!!
Incredible furniture and all sorts.

Nearly all my house has freecyle furniture!
Some knew was giving away what looked like a oka extendable dining table the other day day with beautiful chairs.
You'll need a car if course but sometimes people can deliver.
TK max, rugs pics and dunhelm mill...

Most people I know even those with healthy budgets get stiff from the freecyle, ebay and so on.

EclipseoftheHeart1 · 20/10/2024 21:24

Re paint I used to get reduced tins from home base

MarvellousMable · 20/10/2024 21:25

Lighting. Lamps not ghastly ceiling spot lights. I do have the latter from previous owner but they only get used when the house is cleaned.

In fairness we can stretch to paint! Thanks for all tips,

If you live near Leeds there was a thing on the radio yesterday about a painting library so you can borrow the city’s artworks to put on your walls
Obviously there’s a cost attached (and presumably Ts and Cs to ensure you look after stuff properly), but may be more manageable than a big splurge? museumsandgalleries.leeds.gov.uk/leeds-art-gallery/the-picture-library-at-leeds-art-gallery/
