Boring one… do you have separate tea towels / hand towels in the kitchen?

We need a better system in our house as we’re getting through too many tea towels and I’m sick of washing them so frequently.

What system do you have in your kitchen?

We don’t have a downstairs WC so use the kitchen sink often for hand washing. We use tea towels for all sorts, drying hands, wiping up spills, drying up the pots that don’t go in the dishwasher, taking dishes out the oven. I’m sick of them having so many uses and want to buy some separate hand towels but would like to know what other people do for all of the above.

Thank you!

Yes. We have tea towels and hand towels that are a different material/thickness so it’s blindingly obvious unless you are DH.

LoafofSellotape · 20/10/2024 18:59

No, we have tea towels and I change them once or twice a day. They just get thrown straight in
the washing machine, not like they take up loads of space.

Or anyone in my house who isn't me.

I have hand and tea towels. No one else does.

Blanketyre · 20/10/2024 19:00

We have a hand towel hanging on a hook by the sink. Tea towels are for everything else

3teens2cats · 20/10/2024 19:01

Yes we have a separate hand towel in the kitchen. Gets grubby pretty quick though so washed every couple of days.

HippeePrincess · 20/10/2024 19:01

We get a fresh one out for if we want to dry up pots but I prefer to air dry as it’s more hygienic. We have a separate hand towel as drying hands and then using it for anything else is grubby. Spills are cleaned up by a cloth, or if one of the towels is needing a wash we use that.
We use oven gloves for taking things out of the oven.
we do a couple of separate towel washes a week and just chuck whatever tea towels and cloths in there on 60.

I do!

Yes, we have towelling towels for hand drying, and cotton or linen tea towels for drying dishes. Neither would work properly for the other use - tea towels would get too wet from handwashing to be any use for dishes, and towelling would be inefficient for drying dishes. Plus any remaining hand germs would get onto cutlery and crockery if you mix them up - imagine doing the bins, washing your hands and drying them on the same cloth you’re about to dry your drinking glasses with.

Same in our house.

My mum does in her house but I don't in mine.

CMOTDibbler · 20/10/2024 19:03

Nope. We just have a big stack of tea towels that get used for whatever and then chucked in the laundry room to be washed with napisan once a week

Zippedydodah · 20/10/2024 19:03

Separate hand towels and tea towels, two different textured ones. They’re both changed every couple of days.

Coconutter24 · 20/10/2024 19:03

Tea towels for pots, hand towels for hands, kitchen roll or cloth for spills and oven gloves for taking things out the oven

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 20/10/2024 19:05

We have about 30 so use tea towels as hand towels in the kitchen and swap them out a couple of times a day. Damp or dirty once are chucked into a tub in the corner.

Once the tub of damp ones gets full they go on a 60° wash.

musicalfrog · 20/10/2024 19:08

Yes separate towels this is important for hygiene surely?

They get washed every couple of days.

Pigeonqueen · 20/10/2024 19:10

We don’t really need to dry dishes as our dishwasher does a pretty good job of drying everything afterwards so we just use towelling type tea towels for hand drying really.

RickiRaccoon · 20/10/2024 19:11

Just tea towels in the kitchen. Toilet is far enough away people don't use the sink after toileting. We also have laundry just opposite the kitchen with soap and a hand towel. I have thought about adding a hand towel to the kitchen as we do have hand soap in there and it would be better hygiene-wise but I haven't made the decision yet.

This!!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/10/2024 19:13

Yes, always a hand towel and a tea towel.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/10/2024 19:13

Ive always had a tea towel and a hand towel in the kitchen. I get very annoyed if people use my tea towels for anything other than drying dishes or cutlery, grr.

DramaAlpaca · 20/10/2024 19:13

Yes, separate tea towels and hand towels.

Macaroni46 · 20/10/2024 19:15

Always separate tea towels and hand towels. Tea towels ironed to sterilise them.

JayeAshe · 20/10/2024 19:16

No confusion here : tea towel (smaller) above, hand towel below 😁

Boring one… do you have separate tea towels / hand towels in the kitchen?
MonkeyPuddle · 20/10/2024 19:16

Nah I just have tea towels. Usually one a day, more if it gets visibly mucky.
Dont bother separating them for the washing mind you, just get sling in with whatever wash is going on that day anyway.
