Just to add -years when you are claiming child benefit even if not working .NI contributions are added for you .

Littletreefrog · 20/10/2024 18:38

Sign up for a Government Gateway account then you can keep an eye on lot of things like NI, tax etc.

Only up to 12 years old for the child now though I’m afraid. Can get child benefit up to 18, but NI credits only go to 12 🤷

I had a look and my total doesn't seem to end eg I had 7 years left to pay and it's the same every year.

UPDATE
Just signed up to the App and can see from there it doesnt appear to say Ive under paid estimating full £221.00 per week

It’s amazing how many people have worked all there lives and still have a small shortfall

Yes it would.

LIZS · 20/10/2024 19:01

It should do. I had two figures one forecast as it is and another if I pay full 35 years.

Meceme · 20/10/2024 19:09

The government gateway app will tell you how many fully paid years you have, how many partly paid years, how much each year would cost to make paid in full (if possible) and how many years you have to make up the number of paid up years needed to have a full pension. Then you can decide if its worth it to pay additional money to 'make up' years. It cost me £12.80 to make one underpaid year paid up. A no-brainer for me but it depends how old you are and how many possible years you have left.

80skid · 20/10/2024 19:21

Wow, I've never looked at this before. I have 9 years more contributions to make to qualify for the full pension, but 24 years until I can claim it. Yay...

Rowgtfc72 · 20/10/2024 19:24

Tried to log into this but it's practically impossible without a driving licence and passport.

TalesOfTheGoldMonkey · 20/10/2024 19:27

I checked mine and found that my bastard ex never paid my NI for the five years when I worked in his company, and it is too late for me to pay the shortfall, so I’ll have to pay in for another 5 years.

Make sure you read it carefully. There is the big writing that says you get the full, pension, and then in tiny writing underneath it says how many more years you need to contribute.
Can be misleading and can lull you in to a false sense of security.

It is 35 years of contributions for people starting to work in the last five years. For those of us older it is a random number up to 41 years, from the random sample I have with colleagues aged from 40 to 60.

Check really carefully

isthewashingdryyet · 20/10/2024 19:33

@TalesOfTheGoldMonkey . That's really really awful. What a nasty man
