I'm currently in hospital and thought I would post pictures of the food I'm being served. I live on a greek island, but thought it would be fun to see what people are being served in their countries m..anyone else want to play? Here is my dinner, makaronia pastitsio, served with boiled veg, a side of light greek yogurt and a dessert of cold custard

Curry and a classic jacket spud with soup as a starter! It's from when I had my daughter but I don't suppose it's that different a few years later 😁

Last time I was in hospital I got a dry cheese sandwich but that was fine as I’d had an anaesthetic so food was the last thing in my mind!

Mrsttcno1 · 20/10/2024 17:35

I don’t have a photo but I when I was in hospital after giving birth to my daughter the food was nothing like the above, I wish it was! We were given toast at breakfast time, and then lunch time was a cold sandwich (choice was cheese or egg) and then evening meal was a choice of either another sandwich or soup. The staff and hospital were absolutely amazing but the food absolutely was not😂

In hospital in the NL atm and it's very good! Choice today of salmon, mushroom ragout, beef, mealtime salad with chicken or salmon, and a couple other options. Every day different choice. Three desserts to choose from. Plenty of seconds too. Delicious chips.

Seriously impressed!

It would be good if people could say if they get free hospital care or pay for it. Mine was NHS so I didn’t pay anything, I got toast or cereal for breakfast, sandwich, soup and salad for lunch and cooked meal like pie and mash, fish and chips, cottage pie plus a dessert like apple crumble or sponge and custard for dinner. The worst bit was the veg, it was always boiled and hot very nice.

SeaToSki · 20/10/2024 18:46

Last time I was in (USA)

choice 3 starters. Salad, soup or prawn thingy
choice 3 mains. Beef stew with rice, chicken breast with potato or veggie ravioli all with steamed veg
choice 2 desserts. Choc mousse or fruit yog
hot drink
fruit juice
came with a bread roll with the soup and salt and pepper packets

they also had a whole load of different options if you said you were vegan, gf, low sodium, or other diet (there were about 12 to choose from)

krazipan · 20/10/2024 18:48

@ayvasili it was in West Yorkshire. From what I remember it was good 😁

Dr13Hadley · 20/10/2024 18:50

There is a Facebook group for this! Think it's called rate my hospital plate.

spookyscaryseagulls · 20/10/2024 18:53

My mum was in recently if I hadn't seen the food she was served I would have thought she was lying. The stand out night was cheese and tomato pasta with added Brussel sprouts 😷

Bignanna · 20/10/2024 18:57

A jacket potato, with black mould inside!

WellyBellyBoo · 20/10/2024 18:59

I was sad that the NHS food I had last time I was in only gave me 1-2 of my five a day (a sorry looking apple at lunch and barely a portion of soggy veg at dinner). I had DH bringing in fruit for me but felt sorry for those who didn't have support. It can't help people to to get better and I bet lots end up awfully constipated. Really a shame as care was excellent and the food was otherwise basic but fine.

Melassa · 20/10/2024 19:00

Not me but a relative was in hospital for a while and I was sometimes there at mealtimes so saw what was given. Northern Italy and public healthcare, not a private hospital.

there was a choice of first course - depending on the day it was pasta, or minestrone, or passata (blended vegetable soup) or risotto or rice salad. The second course was usually ham or chicken or fish, or omelette/frittata, with a vegetable on the side like sautéed courgettes or spinach. All served with (a tiny portion of) extra virgin olive oil and Parmesan. Dessert was fruit, either fresh or pureed.

when I was in hospital having DC many years ago we got given horrible tea and biscuits for breakfast and there was no vegetarian choice for lunch and dinner so I lived off the veg and got snacks and drinks brought in for me. Other people seemed to eat well though!

I’ve not long been discharged and didn’t think to take any pictures of my food, I’m a dairy free vegetarian, so that means my meals would be different to the norm. Everything was okay, lots of fresh fruit and veg (which isn’t the norm here in Sweden), we were served but could then also opt to have seconds. The ward also had a little food bar that had fruit, salad, crisp bread etc. If you were walking fit you could also opt to have your meal in any of the hospital cafes. Not a great variety, but thats likely due to my dietary needs.

EmberAsh · 20/10/2024 19:09

I'm fortunate that I haven't been in hospital and been served food for over 6 years now but when I was (UK), it was really quite good.
A choice of meals were available and they were all tasty over the course of about a week.

ayvasili · 20/10/2024 19:15

It's very interesting to see the different options available in different countries, and all seems fairly impressive. I am in a public hospital and everything is free (although my compression stockings and back brace for some reason are not covered, so my husband will have to bring 100e tomorrow when he comes visiting).

Sorry should have said Uk nhs hospital

Davros · 20/10/2024 19:28

I've been in hospital in the UK (London) many times and find the food fine but a bit repetitive if you're in for long. Same style but maybe not exact same dishes. Make sure you have salt and pepper with you though. Soups are always good.

Godesstobe · 20/10/2024 19:30

Three meals ina French hospital this summer. Extra points if you can guess what the food is.

@Godesstobe i’ll take a guess! The first one looks like pureed pumpkin or pumpkin soup. Cooked ham with spinach/greens. The second one looks like some kind of burger or sliced meat with a mushroom type sauce. The final one looks like an anaemic hachis Parmentier. Am I close 😂?

Davros · 20/10/2024 19:41

@Godesstobe vomit and plastic ham?

Andoutcomethewolves · 20/10/2024 19:49

In the last year I've been in three times for a few days at a time, same NHS hospital and ward (I have a chronic condition that can flare up). First two times were great, breakfast was toast, porridge or a choice of cereals, lunch was a choice of two fish/meat dishes plus one veggie with yoghurt, fruit, and/or ice cream for afters. Dinner was the same as lunch (not the same dishes but the same number of options) but we also got soup if we wanted it. Toast, fruit, sandwiches and biscuits were available any time.

The food was actually pretty decent on the whole and gave me something to look forward to on the ward! However the last time they'd changed it so the breakfast and lunch options were the same but for dinner you could only have a jacket potato with either cheese, beans, or beans and cheese. Or you could go for a basic cheese or ham sandwich, or toast. My God by the end of that week I hated the sight of bloody cheese and beans and potato 🤣

Godesstobe · 20/10/2024 21:11

@Melassa First one was potatoes, spinach and a slice of cheap ham; second was apparently roast beef in gravy with green beans; and the third was said to be chicken with green beans. All were completely disgusting and basically inedible. There was no choice and no vegetarian option. Could not believe this was in France, the home of gastronomy.
@Davros you are not far off.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/10/2024 21:20

The food was really good where I gave birth but it was a private clinic rather than a public hospital (in France). Omelette with ratatouille, creamy chicken and mushrooms with polenta, that sort of thing. A choice of three or four main courses. Fruit and yoghurt with every meal. A cake or some macarons with a hot drink at 4pm.

In retrospect I should have stayed in for another night.

daisydaisyrose · 20/10/2024 21:53

Ah! The moment that I saved this pic for has finally arrived!!!

Had op, was nil by mouth from 6pm the preceding day, 26 hours later I was served this gastronomical delight!!! They initially told me that it was too late and there was nothing left, but someone kindly managed to find me this ham salad. I think in the end I just ate the yogurt and some of the veg.

Good old NHS 🙄 this was four years ago. Due another op, hoping there has been an improvement!
