I've gone 3 months without a period, thought brilliant they're stopping, I'm mid 40s and been in peri menopause for ages.
Last Saturday period came, heavy as always. Well it's just not stopped.
Usually I'm heavy for 2 to 3 days, then light for another 4 to 5 days then stop.
This time it's horrendous, I'm flooding every time I stand up, I can literally feel it pouring out of me (sorry tmi). I'm heavier now on day 8 than I was on day 1 and passing black clots too and it's showing no signs of slowing down
My back is hurting so much too and pain down below and the top of my legs.
I just want to curl in a ball and cry 😭

DH reckons I need to seek medical attention, I'm of the "your arm needs to be hanging off" school of thought.

Has anyone else had similar?

I had near identical symptoms a couple of years ago, out of nowhere, it lasted about a month and I became anaemic as a result. I was prescribed traxemic acid, which was very effective, my advice I'd see you GP as soon as possible

Wishing you a restful evening and hope all goes well tomorrow xx

I had a 43 day bleed over Christmas/January, including flooding and impressive clots. Asked my GP - got tranexamic acid, blood tests and then iron tablets, and a gynae appointment quite quickly. I have a small fibroid they don't think is problematic, and "it's probably just peri." They also wanted to check i didn't have another polyp (had one removed 2 years ago after it was spotted at a smear test.) But further options woukd have included a hysteroscopy and having a mirena coil fitted, if they had thought more investigations were needed. Since then, I had 2 mostly normal periods, and none since July, so fingers crossed.

But while you might have a result like mine "probably just peri," you do need it checked.

Yes, mine were caused by fibroid tumours, ended up having a hysterectomy after trying a mirena which came out with the blood clots.
Also became anaemic, couldn't leave the house due to the blood loss and had to go to hospital by ambulance.

This thread is interesting as I had an ovarian cyst removed recently along with a fallopian tube. It was endometriosis and since that my periods have seemed longer. Also the last one was two weeks early and that never happens. I’m always late. I thought it was the cyst removal but maybe it was peri. I’m 43 and my mum said I’m too young.
Hope you’re ok OP x

Not too young at 43 to be perimenopausal. I am 44 and have had a range of symptoms for the past 2 -3 years. Only realised it may be perimenopause about a year ago and tried to manage with diet and exercise. I also started hrt 2 weeks ago. I don't have heavy periods, but they can stop for a few months and then resume as normal. Check the net for information, there’s loads out there. Best to see a specialist, of course.

Well I woke up an hour ago, stood up and immediately filled a massive heavy duty pad.
Lower back pain has got worse so I've rung 111, now waiting for a call back.

I would suspect fibroids.

I have multiple and have had instances where there the blood has literally poured out of me and down my legs........I am also peri and a recent period contained large clots and lasted 3 weeks.

I can't take hrt as it can increase the fibroids, so have ben told that it is either a hysterectomy or riding it out until full menopause.

I would push for a trans vaginal scan so you know what you are up against.

Your doctor needs training as the advice they have given is incorrect. I would go back to your surgery and ask to see someone with perimenopause training.

Very quick callback!

They've prescribed tranexamic acid, sending it over to the pharmacy this morning and told me I need to see GP tomorrow for further investigation.

Going to send DH to chemist as soon as it opens to pick it up, get me some maternity pads as my washer can't keep up with the reusable ones and then curl up on the sofa all day. DH can do all the kids stuff today.

How long until the tablets work does anyone know?

Can take up to 24 hours to work, according to Google x

thistlepiedpiper · 20/10/2024 12:25

It's so good you've been taken seriously. I'm sure once you start the meds you'll feel better. Poor thing! Take it easy and rest, lots of snacks and water to keep your energy up Xx

GinandGingerBeer · 20/10/2024 14:48

Make sure you take it at the prescribed intervals. If you miss a dose you'll be back where you started. Hope it's eased off.

Underbudget · 20/10/2024 15:01

Hope you're doing okay OP. I'm a previous flooder before I had my hysterectomy - it's horrible but my life has transformed since.

Out of curiosity, in what way would you say this advice was wrong?
