Virgin Media - what are you being charged?

My Virgin Media plan is coming to an end soon. I’m currently paying £27 for M350 broadband - is this a good price or overpriced? I’m not sure if that’s the best they can do or not, it’s hard to tell as it seems they offer different discounts to different customers!

I had a row with them and got a £45 discount so am only paying £27 as an existing customer.

lol! What happened with the row? I’ve had service issues with them but they didn’t seem to care much when discussing the discounts

Well what do you know - the single bill my husband has control of, he's been saying that we're in contract (as we've had some bloke come round try and sell us another company) and we're out of contract.

So fucking bone idle, obviously if I don't research it then we'll continue paying nearly £100 a month.

Oh wow! That’s an eye watering amount.

It is interesting seeing the range of offers people have for the same packages. I couldn’t imagine spending some of these amounts - it doesn’t seem like customer loyalty counts for much.

Same M350 broadband only and we renewed for another year at just under £21.
Happy with our service so was relieved that they honoured our old price (I did ring them armed with prices off comparison sites, though).

edit: Our area has a lot of providers though, which probably helps when pretending to leave.

Willowkins · 19/10/2024 22:40

The whole system seems to be based on getting new customers in by offering them cheap deals and then hoping they will just pay the increased costs when the contract ends. Customer loyalty doesn't seem to be rewarded at all.

Neveranynamesleft · 19/10/2024 22:49

They charge whatever they can get away with, awful company. Customer loyalty means absolutely nothing to them. Take a look on Moneysavingexpert.com broadband to compare prices and see if you can get a better deal if you are out of contract.

2EggsShort · 19/10/2024 22:51

I don’t know why but they have always be very good to me with discounts. I pay £58.75 for top speed broadband, home phone, full tv package including sports and movies and an extra box upstairs.

I am shocked to see how much some people are paying.

RobinEllacotStrike · 19/10/2024 23:01

Windywuss · 19/10/2024 17:56

So embarrassed to say I'm paying over £80 a month for broadband only. I have not managed to phone them for a better deal because I'm considering leaving but I hear such awful things about trying to leave, I just can't face it (stressed and chronically ill single mum with a job that needs good internet).

I hate that we all get ripped off unless we have the capacity to be proactive and spend ages on the phone trying to sort it.

Sign up with someone else and then go & cancel with virgin.

I get broadband phone & tv package for £35 /18 months doing this. They were begging me to stay.

XenoBitch · 20/10/2024 02:06

£25pm for M125. Only just signed up, so new customer deal. My ex was paying £57 for it M100 (not even available anymore!) until the bill was put in my name.

My parents are on Virgin, and when the 18 month deal ends, they just switch between them and get new customer deal.

XenoBitch · 20/10/2024 02:11

SunShinesOnLeith · 19/10/2024 21:37

I’m on M125 broadband for £17.40 a month (had to put them on notice to leave to get this price). It drops quite a lot though and I’m considering changing when my contract is up for renewal in January but the thought of changing my email address is what keeps me with Virgin.

How?
I am a new customer and the M125 was £25pm on their site. How do you haggle it lower?

They always have been with me too but this year they were far less generous and wouldn't budge. I will research better for my next end of contract negotiation!

Mine recently went up to £87.04, but that's phone, telly and broadband. We don't have a landline phone, I spoke to them a couple of years ago and they said it was included, with no opt out. I may have to threaten to go with Grain, who installed their cables in our street, earlier in the year!

AwkwardSquad · 20/10/2024 06:54

We’ve had enough of the gouging bastards and we’re moving to BT Openreach, as it was installed in our area this summer.

julesover40 · 20/10/2024 06:54

We pay £79 per month that includes volt M500 broadband, mega tv Inc sports, sky cinema and netflix.
I have to phone, threaten to leave/cancel every 18 months or so to get the best offers. We're also on 02 for our mobile contacts so this helps with further discounts.
Excellent broadband for 2 adults and 2 teens.

Glittertwins · 20/10/2024 07:12

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 19/10/2024 21:21

£36 for M125 broadband. Plus a phone line I never use but it was cheaper with it.
I have to say it's the best internet around here and I rarely have any issues and when I do, it's sorted super fast. Far better internet than my friends on BT

Same here, I was going to drop the landline as we don't use it but it was cheaper to include it.
We also have an issue with the router dropping, VM claim it's us, not them as we have a separate one (their hub is too weak) so we just reboot t every 48 hours or so.

Nourishinghandcream · 20/10/2024 07:50

Woo, some of these packages are insanely priced and I have to wonder why people are staying?

We are with BT (never been with anyone else), get 900Mb, landline & BT TV for £33/M.
I think we were given a "deal" when we moved house but that was 3yrs ago now and it has only gone up from £29/m.
We have a choice of suppliers here (which is unusual as we are relatively rural) so I wonder if they price competitively?

Sayoonara · 20/10/2024 09:05

£50 for broadband (not sure what speed), basic TV and landline (I don't have a landline but it was cheaper to include it than not).

I've gone through the charade of hanging on phone for hours, 'cancelling', being offered discount many times. Yet it still looks like I'm being overcharged when I look at some of the other prices on this thread.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 20/10/2024 09:07

@Nourishinghandcream that seems a great price.

I've debated BT a few times, but I've got a list of reasons so far for not:
Id need to get cables across my living room from the BT box in the hall (which I eventually just want out anyway!)
Lically I've heard lots of first hand complaints about BT
My friend switched from Virgin to BT and it's been nothing but trouble and still not working.
I still have a legacy ntlworld email address id lose.

by the time I've factored in all that hassle, it's easier to debate with virgin for 40 mins and renewal time and so long as I'm under £40 with stable internet, I'm really happy. :)

Dbank · 20/10/2024 09:16

ConcussedPigeon · 19/10/2024 21:17

We’re paying over £145 a month for mid-range TV, M500 broadband and a landline (that we don’t use) package. I think it’s way, way too much, but Virgin are the only broadband provider to our area and they say they can’t reduce the cost 😔

Have you considered Star-link and FreeSat?

I strongly believe that the big corporations for services need legislative reform to stop the customer being ripped off. We're in a situation where we are active punished if we don't have capacity to do research, understand it all and spend lots of precious time and effort switching contracts.

There are thousands of elderly or disabled people or people with mental health issues who are basically paying a tax in services because they are unable to do this work to shop around.

I'm sure you're frustrated with your husband but it just shouldn't be this way. It's out of control.

The burden should be on providers to make sure customer are on fair and best deals for their circumstances.

Same with gas, electric, mobile phones etc.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 19/10/2024 21:50

I'm going to try and sort this on Monday. I'm really pissed off now. We're on M500.

We've also been customers since 2008, so hopefully loyalty counts for something!

That's it though isn't it? Loyalty counts for nothing. They're laughing at us.

bubbletubble · 20/10/2024 10:02

I'm paying £80 a month for broadband, and TV. Tv includes sky sports and BT sports in ultra HD. I was paying £100 and then it was going to increase to £125 so I threatened to leave at the end of the contract. They wouldn't budge on price so I cancelled my contract and they called up a week later and offered me it for £70.

Windywuss · 20/10/2024 10:07

@bubbletubble how does that work ? Did you have another one lined up or were you without service for a bit?

bubbletubble · 20/10/2024 10:10

@Windywuss no, I had to give 30 days notice so still had service :) first time I've ever had to actually cancel normally I just threaten to leave and haggle it down bit they weren't really budging. It's so annoying though and I dread the contract end date every 18 months as I know I have to dedicate hours of calls to call centres trying to haggle.

Exactly. I don't have hours to do it. I just can't.

There's been a couple of threads lately on this. I'm sure someone in the other one mentioned sending a recorded delivery letter to cancel. I'll have to check back

Crunchymum · 20/10/2024 10:28

Too much.

We have broadband, landline and TV with them. Its gone up to £90 a month (was £70!). Basic TV as well. No Sky Sports or anything.

Need to ring them with my annual (well 18 monthly) threat to leave.
