Now I want scones.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 19/10/2024 16:58

As @Havalona so rightly says, the three ingredients version with flour, lemonade and cream are life-changingly excellent scones and I'd never make them any other way.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 19/10/2024 16:59

No, never. I use clotted cream instead of milk in the recipe though.

I don't always have the time or the inclination to bake, but now and then I'll throw some scones together. Be warned..... I don't use eggs or butter either. I use the three ingredient method. SR flour, Sprite or lemonade, and whipping cream. Folks they are gorgeous and so easy.

Obviously I am a heathen and missed the cookery lessons at school....

Wow Im very interested in that recipe but would need lemonade that doesnt have artificial sweetners in it, where can I get that?

Full fat 7up/Sprite or non diet/zero supermarket own brand lemonade.

These all have sweeteners in (as well as sugar) except I think M&S and Waitrose. Almost every soft drink has sweetener now, even if it’s not the diet/Zero version.

Oh, ok I thought it was just sugar. M+S or Waitrose brand so!

As you can see I'm not bothered but prefer the sugary versions even if they have sweeteners in them. I'd say I'll live long enough to eat them anyway!

Icanttakethisanymore · 19/10/2024 20:29

My MIL does scones every week. They are quite ‘cakey’ but they are delicious! I don’t put anything on them (no butter, jam etc) because they are sufficiently cake-ish that you don’t need it. Amazing.

RamblasTapas · 19/10/2024 20:53

My mum is a keen WI Baker.....according to their competion rules scones do not contain egg.

Gulbekian · 19/10/2024 21:10

No sugar, no egg. But buttermilk is a must.

Posh scones for guests, I use an egg. (and sultanas)
Everyday scones for DH, no egg. (and no sultanas)
DH is not worthy of an egg.

@bR

Poor DH 😂

A bit late now, but absolutely not.

I'll try those thanks

Use BBC's ultimate scones with jam and clotted cream recipe - preheat the tray and don't flour it. This works for me every time.

This recipe is absolutely fool.proof and delicious!

I do use an egg to brush them with before baking to glaze (or milk if I haven't got one - but egg is better I think).

Fuckthecamelyourodeinon · 19/10/2024 21:49

Yes I follow MaryB and add the egg.

Sainsbury’s used to do a full sugar one but they’ve stopped it, annoyingly.

hexsnidgett · 19/10/2024 21:58

No egg! Except perhaps to glaze.

soupfiend · 19/10/2024 16:26

Not sure on the egg issue but I know I hate them with baking powder or tartar in it, it makes my teeth feel strange.

I discovered recently this is to do with baking powder having aluminium in it. You can buy aluminium free bp but I've yet to try it. I have started using gluten free baking powder and that doesn't seem to cause the same teeth feel, which both me and my dd get, but I don't know if it's aluminium free as well.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 19/10/2024 22:30

Nicebloomers · 19/10/2024 16:26

I use a recipe that mixes one beaten egg with milk. It leaves a little which you can use to glaze the tops.

Likewise. Also, no baking powder - tastes disgusting.

upinaballoon · 19/10/2024 22:36

No, I don't usually use an egg in scones but I'm going to have a go. Might look at the Mary Berry big book first.

Heronatemygoldfish · 19/10/2024 22:49

Yes. I use my mum's recipe and I haven't a clue where she got it. Really simple one. 8oz SR flour with 2oz of everything else (butter, sugar, sultanas) plus an egg that's beaten with milk. Most gets put in to bind the mix and the last spoonful to glaze them. 12 mins gas 7.

CornishTeaTime · 20/10/2024 09:40

🌸UPDATE
I was so undecided so I made 2 lots yesterday with egg and without. Did a blind taste test on DH and kids we ALL chose the scone without egg. Alot lighter and creamier taste. The egg recipe ones were heavier and not so crumbly.

Vindication!

Breathmiller · 20/10/2024 09:58

Oh I love a scone but can't buy good gluten and dairy free ones. If you don't mind a sideline to your post OP, does anyone have a good GF scone recipe? Preferably without xantham gum.
