No buys on my Etsy business

I have started trying to sell PDF cross stitch patterns. My designs are very complicated and take a really long time and are for advanced stitchers I think that’s my issue, but in 2 days I’ve had over 50 views on my profile and no buys at all. They cost £4. Maybe that’s too much? I don’t want to link to my profile or anything.
TIA

I'm not saying you won't get help here but have a look at Facebook for Etsy sellers- you'll probably find lots of info about getting sales

Two days is no time at all!

Is it clear in your title that for design is not for beginners?

2 days is nothing at all - you need to give it much more time than that.

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 19/10/2024 11:52

I cross stitch but wouldn't just buy I pattern. I like kits even for more complex designs because it avoids the faff of having to sort out my own threads.

Supif · 19/10/2024 11:54

As others have said two days is no time at all, especially on Etsy. Are you also marketing outside of Etsy? If it’s complicated patterns do you have an ig etc showing them and interacting with the cross switching community.

AnellaA · 19/10/2024 11:54

I agree with pp, at this time of year I’m looking for gifts so I’d only click on a pdf if I was hoping the seller had some kits for sale along with the pdf designs

Asparename · 19/10/2024 11:55

I just had a quick look on Etsy and there’s a lot of patterns available much cheaper, like under £2 so maybe you are priced too high.

TickingAlongNicely · 19/10/2024 11:55

We get 20-30 orders a week. Ours views are in the hundreds. Many people browse.

You also have the issue currently of no feedback etc... no one knows how "good" you are. Plus the algorithm promotes Star Sellers.

Hang in there.

Check out a group called Etsy Underachievers it's a great group that helps you optimise your listing's. I used to have an etsy store and had over 500 sales before I closed it

I browse hundreds of things before I choose one.

I also browse Etsy designs for inspiration (amongst other places) when I’m creating a project myself. I’ve rarely bought a pattern from Etsy but I look at lots of them (also Ravelry, Pinterest, etc).

Do you have any idea how large or vibrant the market for patterns is? Is there a thriving trade for patterns via Etsy? Do you and your friends buy patterns there? (Basically, did you do your market research)

"Something must be wrong if I’ve had over 50 views and no one’s bought anything"

Not necessarily. I often have 100 likes before something sells

The only thing that's wrong is that you're being too impatient.

I used to run an online selling business - I'd get hundreds (if not thousands) of views a month and maybe 10-15 orders at the most. It takes a lot of time to build up a decent following online, let alone to make any money out of it.

It's been two days, you need to give it two months (at least).

TheSnugHare · 19/10/2024 12:01

Thanks everyone for the advice

This. I have an Etsy shop - I opened it last year. It can take MONTHS to get your first sale. Etsy is swamped now - there’s millions of shops on there - so you need to temper your expectations. Unless you’re making something totally unique or selling in a niche - sadly you’ve an uphill struggle. Views and shop visits don’t mean that people intend to buy anything sadly - most are just browsing.

I make and sell one off totally unique, one off pieces and have just hit 600 sales but it took a very long time for me to build my shop and develop a following. It’s hard work, and to see any success you need a shop with every single legal policy completed, top notch photographs and a track record of excellent customer service. Etsy is no longer a “list it and it will sell” platform.

RevelryMum · 19/10/2024 12:16

Etsy takes forever to take off and you have to put a lot of time into it initially it can take 6 months for you to gain regular sales that being said you need to look at your pricing ? Are you uploading digital items to sell regularly this helps boost your shop . Ru. Discounts ? What's the description on the product will people find it easily where searching ? There is a lot more to it than uploading and expecting sales .

Blessedbethefruitz · 19/10/2024 12:25

I've bought more expensive cross stitch patterns on etsy :) Sometimes I'll have a few in my basket for a week or more while pricing up threads/ordering fabric, etc.

Although I have since switched to printed kits, partly because it's so much more cost effective, partly because the little free time I have I don't want to be stuck counting lol. I just want to stitch with comfort tv ;)

LottieMary · 19/10/2024 13:47

I’d usually buy kits but might buy pdfs. I would usually lol ok at something 2-3 times before buying.

did you upload all at once? I would have thought Etsy rewarded dripping onto the site regularly as well perhaps.
