Anyone who took labetalol in pregnancy, how was your baby?

I know it can lower blood sugars so I’m a bit worried about how it will affect her. Grateful for any experiences shared

I was on labetalol, nifedipine and blood thinning injections from 27 weeks. My baby was born at 35 weeks and is a perfectly healthy child. I wouldn’t have any concerns about taking it again based on my experiences.

No issues whatsoever.

No issues at all. Except it eventually didn’t control my blood pressure and I got raging preeclampsia but that wasn’t the drugs fault! Baby totally fine born at 39+2 by elective c section!

Low blood sugars on birth, 2 days in SCBU, tube feeding initially but we were on post natal ward by day 3 and home on day 7 (more due to my anxiety than his need). Our little boy was also growth restricted though and we had placenta issues and had a previous late loss so born at 37 weeks 4lb13oz so some of that will have also contributed to time in SCBU.

Doctors and nurses consistently told me the labetalol low blood sugars are normal and he would come out of it and he did.

I prescribe labetalol everyday and have never actually seen an otherwise well baby hypoglycaemic as a result, including mum's taking 600mg four times a day. The teeny tiny growth restricted 37 weekers or diabetic mums fair enough, it isn't a surprise. Everyone is very very cautious with new babies as profound low sugars can cause brain damage and seizures.

There is clear evidence of the benefit of controlling blood pressure in mothers as it reduces the risk of stroke.
