Restaurant hidden gems in Leeds

MarvellousDay · 17/10/2024 19:27

Travelling to Leeds for a couple of days for work and would love some restaurant recommendations. Ideally more hidden independent /local placesthan chains and not exorbitantly expensive. I am happy to eat most things so not tooo fussy but would love something a bit different.

Found a thread on Birmingham when I visited recently and the recommendations were spot on so hoping for similar outcomes.

Mowgli

Ooh no
apart from starters very bizarre combo of flavours. Bangladeshi twist/origin chef. Could not eat the mains

Do not go to Mowgli. Small portions, uninspiring, watery Indian dishes. Avoid!
My recommendations would be independent restaurants Kendell’s Bistro, Sous le Nez (both French) or Chaophraya (Thai)

Tapped for amazing pizza and craft beer.

Bomba for tapas and paella.

Trinity Kitchen is a great concept for informal dining with a mix of permanent casual restaurants and street food vans.

There's also another great Indian street food place in a railway arch just down from Bundobust and Tharavadu, which are both often full.

Agree with Theravada, Stuzzi, Sarto, Salvos, House of Fu! Love them all.

And also the market for the various excellent stalls. As well as the great food in the main food court area, there are other eateries scattered around the market. A middle-eastern place, a Thai kiosk, a Chinese roast pork +rice cafe…

Couple of other ideas:

For really authentic Thai food in a very no-frills environment, we go to Thai A Roy Dee on Vicar Lane.

Authentic Chinese food - Home on Blenheim Terrace near the university, or Wen’s on North Street.

Bettys

mumtaz

There's no Betty's in Leeds

SallyWD · 21/10/2024 08:21

I agree with Theravadu (South Indian food). It's wonderful! And Sous Le Nez. I've heard Riva Blu is good but haven't been. I like the Gino D'Campo restaurant in Boar Lane.

There's no Betty's in Leeds

And even if there were, I don't think anyone could ever describe Betty's as a 'hidden gem'!

I believe his flat overlooked it. [shudder] Never encountered him. My Dad almost certainly did through his work but I don't remember him mentioning JS. Too late to ask him now.

Not quite, his flat overlooked the park and the lake. You can’s see that row of shops and restaurants from there.

But yes, the old slimeball was often in The Flying Pizza and Mermaids’s (Cantor’s, Fisherman’s Wife) chippy about a mile up the road. Well known for sexually harassing the female staff.
Leeds United football players were in Flying Pizza a lot, and some of the YTV & North people. My friend had her very pregnant bump patted by Richard Whitely while waiting for a table.

Salvo’s isn’t quite what it was, and obviously Hansa’s shutting down due to retirement was a blow. But Sous Le Nez, Kendall’s, Little Tokyo, Owt, Bundobust (now a local chain, but still great) Tharavadu (always good) are all excellent.

For more English style food there’s The Midnight Bell on Water Lane and Three’s A Crowd in what was The Regent is shaping up pretty well, although The Regent was bloody lovely.

Midnight Bell Sunday roast.

I’m almost sad I don’t live there any more now!

Abyssinia is good for Ethiopian food

Floofydawg · 21/10/2024 15:44

Mowgli is shit. It's also a chain.

Another vote for Tharavadu. My Thai is also good, but not licensed if that matters to you.

WingBingo · 22/10/2024 08:02

Bunderbust is much better than Mowgli

Topsy1976 · 22/10/2024 08:37

Fourth vote for Viva Cuba - amazing food and ambiance
