Can I do better than this?

I am a 42 year old single parent who ran a small business for 8 years (sadly closed due to after effects of the pandemic), in my twenties I also spent four years in an administrative/sales role.

Four years ago I started working in the charity sector in an operations/managerial role and I'm currently on a salary of £33k a year. Living in London and renting privately, I only manage with universal credits top ups and things are very tight.

I feel like I've worked so hard (but perhaps not smart) throughout my life, I'm well liked at work, people see me as capable and often ask for my input. I think I should be able to earn more than this and have a decent life where I don't have to rely on benefits.

I just have no idea what sort of industry/jobs I should be looking at and what is realistic for someone in my situation. I have lots of experience but haven't taken a straight career path. I never had any guidance from parents, didn't go to uni and failed some of A levels due to issues at home.

Even on double my salary things would be tight, but at least I would be supporting myself without benefits. Any helpful ideas for a career change? Is it too late?

Civil servant? Loads of different roles. What kind of work do you do now? Operational could be just about anything from running charity shops or arranging fast deployments of international aid!

Similar to managing a nation wide training programme, so my area of responsibility involves managing the partner organisations, facilitators and (more indirectly the course participants). A big part of my role is a large expansion project, so finding new partner organisations and creating links in new areas. I also spend a lot of my time resolving issues, evaluating what isn't working and implementing solutions.

Put "operations manager" into the search bar of Indeed and Guardian Jobs, you can easily double your salary. Good luck.

Project management? If you are interested in this it would be sensible to try and get some PM qualifications before you start applying.
