Why does life seem to shit in the UK

RosieLeaLovesTea · 16/10/2024 23:15

Endless threads about schools going down the pan and poor behaviour in schools making teachers want to leave.
NHS waiting lists and quality of care medical is poor.
housing market market in crisis and affordability of housing

I read the threads and it feels like life in the UK is really shit. Plus crap weathe for 8 months of the year.

how did we get here snd what is the solution?

I feel like that too but I also read the Irish Times and see that they have a lot of the same problems there. I think it’s a worldwide capitalist on steroids thing. Not sure what the solution is. My kids plan to live in a forest in Finland and work online. And not have any kids themselves…

SquirrelSoShiny · 16/10/2024 23:24

It's not just here but other countries have better weather which probably makes it feel easier to be optimistic.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 16/10/2024 23:26

It's shit in a lot of places. I live in 2 countries at different times in the year and 'same shit, different day' rings true.

T4phage · 16/10/2024 23:27

We never recovered from the 2008 financial crisis. Plus all the Tory years of non investment in and running down of public services. I feel guilty for having had children. They're both planning to leave the UK. The eldest has a good job and good prospects, but he says that housing is totally unaffordable and he can't stay in shared accomodation forever. Ds2 is planning on going to Eastern Europe. Me and dh shall live out our days eating unaffordable rubbish food, trying to get a GP appointment and coping with the never ending rain 😭

TeenLifeMum · 16/10/2024 23:29

People love being negative. Is it really shit in the uk? I can list quite a few worse places. If you don’t like where you live, move. Life is far too short to be miserable.

I think the difference is expectation. The Irish health service was always awful. I remember reading people complaining about waiting 4 hours in UK for A&E and thinking wow, that sounds amazing they are so lucky!

GalaticalFarce · 16/10/2024 23:38

It is pretty shit here. I have friends in Germany and US and they think it's shit here too. And I see it's not as shit for them over there.
Schools are better, German health service is better, US is too if you have good insurance but probably shit for others.
Their salaries are higher, homes are more spacious, weather is better so more outdoorsy. This makes a massive difference.

Why don’t you go with your ds2?

Whatisthisifound · 16/10/2024 23:40

Why don’t you go with your ds2?

Too old now.

username3678 · 16/10/2024 23:41

We've had really severe austerity for years and lack of investment in our infrastructure and public services. A cost of living crisis including a big rise in rents and energy bills. A housing crisis and people are fighting like rats in a sack.

I won't mention neoliberalism and populism.

GherkinJar · 16/10/2024 23:51

Too many people.

MaybeNotBob · 16/10/2024 23:52

Did you vote for Brexit?

Grantanow · 16/10/2024 23:55

It does seem worse now than in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Public services were quite good though not perfect. Too much Tory government, privatisation and under-investment have contributed to a general run down.

Halfemptyhalfling · 16/10/2024 23:55

We had an empire and took resources from other countries plus we had our own coal. Now we don't. Also decline of Christian values. Brexit exacerbated a lot of problems

Gettingbysomehow · 16/10/2024 23:58

I'm extremely happy. I moved into a very affordable home out in the sticks in Somerset. I do work but it's a job I love.
I decided after I got divorced I'm going to live the life I want and I am.
I hated living in the south east. It was never my home and I wasted too many years doing what other people want.
DS and DIL are both moving up here too and working from home.
Life is what you make it.

Don’t read the threads then.

People who think other countries are the promised land often haven’t lived in other countries. Many countries have big problems that you wouldn’t know about if you had only been as a tourist.

I love this country and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Yes there are challenges but there are so many good things. Our sense of humour. Our history and heritage. Our beautiful, varied landscape. Our mild climate. Our tolerance and multiculturalism. Our universities. So many things.

Circumferences · 17/10/2024 00:15

It really is shit here, sorry.
We've had decades of unlimited mass immigration on top of austerity leading to a total crush in demand for public services.
Housing is unaffordable and privatisation of all the countries assets has been disastrous.

It's "going to get worse before it gets better" under Kier Starmer too. Lucky us.

SnowFrogJelly · 17/10/2024 00:18

It doesn't
Try living in the US

WallaceinAnderland · 17/10/2024 00:23

Because you only ever hear about the bad stuff.

Stringagal · 17/10/2024 00:26

All of the above reasons, plus our tabloids are totally intent on dividing the country by constantly whipping up fear and distrust.

Shite summer, too. We’re generally more optimistic when it’s sunny.

Stretchedresources · 17/10/2024 00:27

Austerity. (thanks Osborne you prick)
Rain. And even that wouldn't be so bad if councils had the money to fix drainage and flooding.

2021x · 17/10/2024 00:31

Genuine question shit compared to what? The cost of living is the same everywhere. There are just more people and less resources so the market is in the sellers favour

In additions services for dependents (children and the elderly) are strained due to the hugely disproportionate swing towards elderly population compared to the normal high numbers of children.

In 10 years time when all this will start to swing back in western countries there will be a surplus of supply and it will be a buyers market and services will be more functional again.

Livelovebehappy · 17/10/2024 00:31

Depends on what stage you’re at in life. I wouldn’t want to be a parent of young children here atm. Rubbish schools, expensive child care, increased cost of living, must be really hard for young families. Plus the uncertainty of what the future looks like with all the unrest in the world. I’m older with adult children. Mortgage free, enjoying my job, holidays and weekends away both in the UK and abroad. No health issues. I feel I’m living my best life now. Would like the weather to be better though.

I agree with this. Someone in my family has spent a lot of time in Germany and is always stunned at how much better things are there in every way. Every time I go abroad in Europe I’m struck by how nearly every aspect of life is better there . This country is really going down the pan.
