Did you know about ETIAs coming in 2025

Sundaysundaybetterthanmonday · 16/10/2024 16:42

I don't know how this has totally passed me by but we've just had an email from our travel company about them starting next year.

What is ETIAS - European Union (europa.eu)

New requirements to travel to Europe

What is ETIAS

The rules of travel to Europe have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025, some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries are required to have a travel authorisation to enter most European countries.

I had heard of this, although not particularly registered the details, as I haven't got any holiday plans at the moment, but I think you are right that a lot of peope won't have.

Hopefully this will bump for you.

LadyGAgain · 17/10/2024 00:25

Thank you. So, do all Uk passport holders need to apply if they're travelling to Europe?

thecrispfiend · 17/10/2024 00:33

I had not even heard about this, looks like abroad travel is about to get a lot more complicated 🤯 thanks for sharing

AutumnLeaves24 · 17/10/2024 00:48

news to me, I'll have a proper read in the morning ☕️

Simonjt · 17/10/2024 01:28

Yes, we live in an EU country and this has been in the press a bit very recently.

StrandedStarfish · 17/10/2024 02:04

Thank you for this. I had no idea.

Londonnight · 17/10/2024 05:51

Yes, I have heard of it, but speaking to people at work who holiday in Europe every year, very few have. I think there are going to be lots of people who get caught out with this.

Grapesofmildirritation · 17/10/2024 05:56

Yes I have, it was covered extensively in the newspapers I read when it came out (Guadian, Times) - but I did comment on one one of the articles that for years people will be caught out and there will be lots of “sad face” news stories. Much like the passport expiry rules that are covered extensively in newspapers but never fail to trip people up every summer!

there should be a pop up prompting people to get one every time they buy any kind of travel to the EU

SickOfThisSht · 17/10/2024 06:22

Probably just a bit too early in the morning for me but I’m assuming from what I read that there’s nothing required the other way round? I’m a citizen but hold a European passport from one of those countries (settled status but no British passport) so presumably I don’t need one to travel out and there is no requirement for me to travel back in? 🤔
(I will probably wake up a bit more shortly ans answer my own question 😂)

unsync · 17/10/2024 07:26

It's been mooted for years so yes. It was put back because of the Olympics. It does keep getting pushed back, but does seem it's finally going ahead. It's the same type of thing the Americans have.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 17/10/2024 07:32

Yes, I had heard. I can't remember the exact date but I was expecting to need it for my ski holiday last January. Then the date got delayed.
It was in the news over a year ago and I keep watching to make sure I need to know when to apply for it.
Still not needed for my holiday next Feb.

AlpacaMaJammas · 17/10/2024 08:10

So does each country need a separate one or does one do all the countries? Ie landing in Amsterdam and driving to Germany, do we need 2 or does 1 suffice?

TianasBayou · 17/10/2024 08:53

I had heard about it but it's not yet live. When it's about to go live expect it to be extensively publicised.

It's €7 and last 3 years or until passport expires.

Applications will be online with almost immediate approval, much like the ESTAs for USA travel.

But yes there will be folk living under a rock who turn up for their once a year holiday to Spain and claim ignorance.

Not only mooted for years but the UK voted for it..

shockeditellyou · 17/10/2024 09:04

If I am a dual citizen, how does it work? Can I enter on my EU passport and return on my UK one? I had to go through French exit border control and UK entry border control in the space of 50metres on the Eurostar - there's nothing to stop me swapping passports half way, is there?

unsync · 17/10/2024 09:50

GrumpyPanda · 17/10/2024 08:56

Well there is that, but I get fed up of saying it and as far as im concerned, those that voted for it, deserve everything that's happened. It's just a shame that it affects everyone. I shan't post my full feelings as it will derail this.

Plus I'm fortunate enough to have EU citizenship anyway so I'm not affected by the travel shitshow of passport queues for stamping in and out, passports not having enough time on them or the chaos that those unaware of ETIAS will bring.

YellowphantGrey · 17/10/2024 09:51

Yes. It's the same as applying for a visa to holiday in America

Nasyan · 17/10/2024 09:54

I wonder if it will be the same as USA visa regarding convictions

Yes, there will be something required the other way round - the Electronic Travel Authorisation, scheduled to apply to European countries from 5 March 2025.

İ'd just show both passports at each maybe?

I don't know whether the criteria a decision will be based on will be exactly the same, but you will have to declare criminal convictions, amongst other things.

Don’t have a British passport just my European one but I have settled status. To be fair I should’ve sorted out getting naturalised years ago but I’ve been here since I was so little and it never really affected my life (and it got super expensive 😅) that it wasn’t a priority.

I’m sure the guidelines will be clearer when they actually get round to implementing it anyway 😂

If you continue travelling on your non British passport you won't need the ETA "if you have any of these:

  • a visa
  • permission to live, work or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme)
  • a British or Irish passport
  • a British overseas territories citizen passport"

Thank you, that’s what I thought.
Everyone else in my household will still need one though 🙄 and tbh I actually didn’t know about this so this has been a very useful thread. Thanks OP.
