Drugs, alll the sedatives and uppers that could be prescribed

My son's new girl friend has a bath AND washes her hair twice a week. AIBU to think this us too much, surely once a week is more than enough?

My DH made friends with another man in the waiting room at the hospital whilst I was in a twilight sleep, and now they are inseparable! How do I politely tell him that I can’t keep entertaining them at ours as it’s just too much work for the maid to do!

To make matters worse my son has been playing with his new science kit and now everyone is glowing yellow!

Thread for unpopular opinions. Is it just me or is a Formica kitchen a bit common?

Should we change the bathroom to include an indoor toilet? I'm worried about the smell, but it would be nice not to have to go out in the snow.

DD wants to go to university. AIBU to think she should become a secretary instead?

Site stuff: can we have a board to discuss women's rights? I'm sick of getting my arse pinched at work - and surely I should be able to get a mortgage. It's the 1950s, not the 1850s.

Attelina · 16/10/2024 13:14

They wouldn't.

Women were far more capable back then. Resilient and stronger on the whole.

Traditional values made for a stable home life for.

Most Women took greater pride in their appearance and ate healthily.

I'm really worried about my 19yo DS.

He seems to have an active social life - he regularly goes to a fancy nightclub in SoHo (I forget the name of it) most evenings, he gets plenty of exercise out and about walking our DDog on Hampstead Heath and goes to Brighton for the weekend with his friends at least once a month...

However, in spite of this, he has never yet had a girlfriend. He's a very kind lad; caring, loving - so I am absolutely amazed that he isn't courting by now.

There must be a special young lady somewhere out there for him, so why has he never brought a girl home and introduced us to her?

I don't even like Guinness, aibu not to drink it during pregnancy even though the doctor said I should?

newnamethanks · 16/10/2024 13:17

Hubbies. How to get one and how to keep one and keep him happy. Cooking. Cleaning. Clothes. Make up. Hairstyles. Babies and children. That's it.

TheStroppyFeminist · 16/10/2024 13:23

When my husband gets home from work should I prioritise cooking him some meat and 2 veg or looking nice and putting my lipstick and panstick on?

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 16/10/2024 13:24

I will be 24 next year, but I still am not a mother yet.

My DH says we should be in a better financial position to start thinking about TTC in the new year, as he will qualify for overtime then and, hopefully, be in line for a promotion within 6 months - but if I'm honest, I'm terrified of the thought of having a baby and being such an elderly mother.

Is it even safe to conceive at such an age? Will I have the energy to cope with a little one - and will they be laughed at in school for having such an aged mum? Will I even be around to see them grow up?

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 16/10/2024 13:25

Lots of stuff about affairs with neighbours.

People had struggles then just as they do now

As another poster mentioned, "resilience" was obtained through drugs.

Uppers (pep pills aka amphetamines, also used as a very popular diet pill) and Downers (sedatives and sleeping pills).

And smoking.

ETA. Although 1960s talked of "Mother's Little Helper" loads of men took the drugs too.

Plus ça change. (Though I think today's drugs sound a bit more shit, or at least less fun).

I could imagine help I'm pregnant but not married and getting a bashing.
How to survive living with the bastard
Princessing thread would be interesting, they took great care of hair styles and rollers in for the set permed look, Hollywood inspired make up tips or maybe inspired by the queen and princess Margaret and a lot more frugal money saving threads.

And that sexy new milkman with the cheeky wink who's just taken over the round on their street.

I just had a quick look and the average age of a first time mum in 1950 was 24.6yrs. It hit a low of 23.5 in 1965.

I'm 16 and my boyfriend wants to kiss with tongues but I'm worried this would make me pregnant, does anyone know if this is possible?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/10/2024 13:33

Hoorah! Now sugar is no longer rationed I'm going to eat loads and loads of it and make my teeth rot, then I can get some free dentures from the that new National Health system.

Warmhandscoldheart · 16/10/2024 13:34

Has anyone any tips to keep birds from pecking the tops of my milk bottles and drinking the cream?

DreadingWinter · 16/10/2024 13:37

I've missed my period and I'm due again this week. I am constantly sick. I asked my doctor this morning and he said to come back if my period doesn't arrive. Do you think I could be pregnant?

TheGoddessMinerva · 16/10/2024 13:37

@EarthlyNightshade
“My DS won't stop reading, I'm worried it will addle his brain. WWYD?“

I think you should just thank your lucky stars you haven’t got a daughter that won’t stop reading. An educated girl? What a waste!

I'm pregnant and keep being sick. My doctor has given me these tablets are they safe?

Is that a random question or are you thinking of thalidomide? My mil would have been given thalidomide had my fil not been in the navy and they were stationed abroad at the time.

I've POAT (pissed on a toad). Can anyone read the results?

DreadingWinter · 16/10/2024 13:45

I'm 16 and got myself into trouble. My mum says that I have to have the baby adopted, but I don't want to. She says that I'll never find a husband if I have a baby in tow and I'll bring disgrace to the family if anyone finds out. She says she'll throw us both out unless I go ahead with the adoption and I will have nowhere to live. My dad doesn't know. How can I keep my baby?

redtrain123 · 16/10/2024 13:50

Help. My dd seems very friendly with the son of that family who came to Britain on the Windrush boat.
