Driving question: would you flash?

Driving home this evening, I noticed a car ahead of me with no lights on (assume they had been for a service and auto lights switched off, it was a newish car).

Obviously hazardous and surprising that the driver didn't realise as not a well-lit road.

I noticed that no one was even trying to attract the driver's attention which surprised me. After about half a mile they got into the lane I was in, immediately in front of me: I flashed my lights a couple of times, they lit up and flashed hazards as a thank you.

All perfectly normal but I noticed something similar the other day - no one trying to help in a similar situation. So I wondered why?

I would flash them. Think that's normal.

Absolutely. Infact I look forward to it if I see one approaching.
It sometimes happens on the motorway too (obviously I flash from behind) 😏

Yes I would flash them, but Christ some people are SO slow it's scary!!

There used to be an urban myth years ago about gang members who would drive with no lights and then kill the first flasher, as an initiation. I remember being shocked that a couple of otherwise sensible friends actually believed it. Maybe it's still got some traction?
