Is it routine for Health Visitors to be informed after an A&E visit?

Hi,

Is it routine for Health Visitors to be alerted after an A&E visit? My DD's HV has been in touch after a recent A&E visit to have her weighed.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Yes, my son broke his arm by abseiling out of his cot and the health visitor came to see us shortly afterwards.

Completely.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/10/2024 17:35

I’ve always heard it is but I took my then 4 month old to a&e with sudden unexplained bleeding last year and never heard a peep afterwards.

Darkfloods · 15/10/2024 17:35

Yes. If your child is school age and has multiple A&E visits then a school nurse may be in contact.

DreadPirateRobots · 15/10/2024 17:36

Yes, entirely routine.

Not really the point, but did you just say you went to a&e to have your child weighed?

Ponderingwindow · 15/10/2024 17:37

I’m wondering if I am misunderstanding the op as well. My newborn had weight gain issues and we had to go in for daily weight checks in the early days, but we never landed in a&e.

TwistedSisters · 15/10/2024 17:38

I didnt actually know this, but we had a car accident a few months ago and were all taken to A&E and our health visitor contacted me a couple weeks later, apparently it's standard.

Uselessatbeingaperson · 15/10/2024 17:39

I've re read it now and yes it seems the OP went to A&E to get their baby weighed. Why?

Lj8893 · 15/10/2024 17:39

I think the OP means the HV has contacted her to have DD weighed, not that she went to a&e to be weighed!

Perfectly routine OP.

Yes - 20 years ago it was the norm! My eldest at 6 weeks had a need for ambulance being called. We had a call a few days later and as it was around a choking episode (she was a very sickly baby and issues around that) they invited us to a group baby session they were running - baby accidents choking etc and we both went found it helpful and met some friends!

K0OLA1D · 15/10/2024 17:41

Depends on age etc. My ds 2 broke his wrist when he was just 2 and then his other wrist 12 months later. They contacted me after the second one, asked how he was etc. But never visited.

DS2 had a severe 3rd degree burn at 2 and they never got in touch at all

About 15 years ago when my DGS was 3 he was jumping around and knocked his front tooth out when staying with his granddad, my ex. Ex and his partner took him to A&E because of the bleeding - the GP practice was informed.

Feelingstrange2 · 15/10/2024 17:43

Different end of the spectrum but my father, who has dementia, often goes to A and E - well, we take him. Part of the discharge assessment is safeguarding - no idea who they tell. But, whoever it is, they are more than welcome to come around as see we've done.

saraclara · 15/10/2024 17:43

Yep. My daughter popped her elbow out at Tumble tots, I took her straight to A&E and a couple of days later the HV came to visit.
I'm glad that they do, but on that occasion I was also relieved that there'd been lots of witnesses!

GPs routinely get copies of A and E notes and hospital ward discharge letters, I'm.sure

prescribingmum · 15/10/2024 17:50

Yes completely normal, it is for safeguarding as parents who abuse used to visit different A&E each time to avoid raising suspicions. By having each visit registered with HV/school nurse as well as GP (who always would have received it) the aim is to pick up on these trends of multiple visits.

Nothing to be concerned about though

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 15/10/2024 17:51

Yes totally normal. Your GP and HV will have been notified. All part of the NHS.

FrancisSeaton · 15/10/2024 18:42

Yup standard information sharing

user242526 · 15/10/2024 21:53

Sorry for the confusion. She went to A&E as she was vomiting on and off for 5+ days. They diagnosed her with a UTI and the HV messages today to follow-up from the A&E visit and to have baby weighed (she's been sick on and off for a month with various bugs from starting nursery and has lost quite a bit of weight as she's either been sick (with the UTI) or refused most of her food and milk with a bug
