Dh wants to watch a horror tonight to get in the pre Halloween spirit! Any recommendations please?

I love the old ones too.
Rosemary's Baby is great, second that.
The Shining
Don't look now
The Little Girl who Lives Down the Lane

All brilliantly atmospheric!

Smile is good but a bit gory I recall. It may be pay per view atm

The original Candyman is better for me than the new edition . A bit like the original Carrie over the remake.

The Wicker Man

Hereditary

A Dark Song

The Wailing

you are very much speaking my language!

I would also add for the casual viewer who isn’t necessarily after the more ‘elevated horror’ experience but something kinda fun/schlocky:

Talk to Me
Smile
Barbarian
Orphan and Orphan first kill
X
Incantation
Last Night in Soho

For something a little darker/more serious:

The Dark and the Wicked
Speak no Evil (original)
When Evil Lurks
The Devils Bath
Men
The VVitch
It Follows
The Feast
Suspiria (2018)

Creep is another if you want a slasher(set at Charing Cross tube station and the unused hospital wards). Never have I heard all the women in the cinema all gasp and cross their legs at the same time until that film.

Edited

That is literally the only scene I remember from that film. Ouchy.

I recently watched Cobweb on Netflix which I enjoyed. It's really creepy the whole way through. And I loved Get Out. Again creepy and unsettling rather than full on horror.

The autopsy of Jane doe. Shit myself. ! Watched the entity the other night, hadn't seen it in years, excellent film

We can be friends. I would add Sinister and The Descent.

Puttingupscaffolds · 15/10/2024 18:14

The Hills Have Eyes is the darkest horror I've seen. Horrible.

BebbanburgIsMine · 15/10/2024 18:27

Final Destination

The first one is by far the best, but I do enjoy the two girls on the sunbed in the third film!

MammaKel · 15/10/2024 18:29

It follows

Lostinbrum · 15/10/2024 18:35

Cabin in the woods is good. Esp if you've not seen it before. I know it's a bit of a marmite film but paranormal activity scares the shit out of me lol. The grudge is also good

Tooty78 · 15/10/2024 18:42

The original Salems Lot.

The tv adaptation of Woman in Black, far superior than Daniel Radcliffe version. The full movie is on YouTube.

BasiliskStare · 15/10/2024 18:45

The 1963 version of the Haunting is one of the scariest films I have ever seen

username3678 · 15/10/2024 18:57

The Changeling
Rosemary's Baby
Get Out
Blair Witch Project
24 Hour Photo
The Babadook
Sixth Sense
The Haunting
Insidious
Amtiville
Let the Right One In (original)
Paranormal Activity
St Maude
Dark Water (original)
Suspiria (original)
Gothika

InMyGarden · 15/10/2024 19:26

Carry On Screaming 😁

Cotswoldmama · 15/10/2024 19:27

I love all the classics but I rewatched Host recently and is it really good lots of jump scares but not really gory more scary

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 15/10/2024 20:43

The Changeling - the 1980 one with George.C. Scott- one of my favourites.
Poltergeist
The Haunting
The Fog

LampHat · 15/10/2024 20:47

Daddy’s Head on Prime! (Just need to sign up to the Shudder subscription and cancel within the week or it’s £5 a month.)

AndSoFinally · 15/10/2024 21:48

The original Speak No Evil, the Scandinavian one, is excellent. The new James McAvoy remake isn't so good.

BebbanburgIsMine · 16/10/2024 16:40

The Lost Boys is excellent.

No gore, and not scary, (not for younger children though)

Just great fun

DemonicCaveMaggot · 16/10/2024 16:45

What We Do In the Shadows (the movie version) is not scary but very funny.

Event Horizon is frightening but a bit depressing.

Some of the classic B movies - Them, The Thing (1952 version), Quatermass and the Pit

Deep Blue Sea is supposed to be the second best shark movie after Jaws, and it is good, even my DC liked it and they usually don't like creature features.
