Newcastle recommendations

I'm looking for some tips please - we are spending 2 days in Newcastle for our Son's graduation and would love some ideas to make some special memories and celebrate.

We are staying in the Quayside area.

I'm looking for somewhere with good (but reasonably priced!) food for a meal on our first night and then somewhere a bit more special for dinner after the graduation.

Cocktails drinks after graduation / before dinner - was thinking of the bar above the Baltic?
Is this good?

Some sightseeing ideas to pass some time on the day we arrive with Husband, me and Son's girlfriend (as Son has to do some work that day).

Would also like to treat his girlfriend to something like us getting our nails done - any recommendations around the Quayside area for this?

Thank you 😊

Cafe 21 on the quayside is fab - it is relaxed but also for special occasions https://21newcastle.co.uk/
The Broad Chare is posh pub food. Dobson and Parnell also nice.

The Baltic itself is pretty interesting.
The electric bus will take you up into Newcastle City Centre.. the castle keep is pretty interesting and is the whole point of the city's name: https://www.newcastlecastle.co.uk/

21

Terry Laybourne's 21, Newcastle Upon Tyne Quayside, a city centre restaurant with a city centre buzz. Warm, generous hospitality, skilful cooking, a good-time feel and Private Dining.

What kind of food do you like?

If you like Italian food Gusto and Babucho’s are both amazing and both down the Quayside. Or for somewhere good but reasonably prices for your first night Uno’s is down the Quayside and the food there is always fab and really decent value!

There’s also Tomahawk down the Quayside which is fab for steak but is a bit pricey.

The Botanist is beautiful for cocktails but is a little walk from the Quayside.

Pitcher & Piano is down the Quayside and does lovely food and drinks, very nice and all glass so you look out onto the river. The only thing I would say about Pitcher & Piano is (in my opinion) if you go on a weekend it’s more like a bar than a restaurant. We went a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon and there were people standing drinking in amongst the tables people were eating at which personally I wouldn’t love if I was out for a nice meal.

Great, thanks for the suggestions so far!

Forgot to say, we are going in December on a Monday/Tuesday.

I should also add, we do have 1 fussy/plain eater so gourmet tasting menu's probably not suited for this trip! (sadly!)

Ooh - if you bring your big coats then the Xmas market will be on at the Monument (Newcastle city centre). It is likely to be bloody freezing!

I'd say a visit to the Keep would be advised, as well as St Nicholas's Cathedral. I don't eat out in town much, but there's Côte, which is Near the Monument, only a short walk up Dean Street - Grey Street and left just past the Theatre.

You could also try the Metro up to Tynemouth, there are numerous pubs, bars and cafes, as well as the weekend market, in the Metro Station. Allard's is really very good and Long Sands fish and chips, down Hotspur Street (a few metres left off Front Street is excellent. The fish curry is amazing, it's a sit in place, licenced for booze.

Oh thinking of the cathedral - French Quarter is a really nice informal restaurant. Will fussy eaters tolerate boeuf bourgignon? Delicious but not spicy or anything https://www.frenchquarternewcastle.co.uk/
+1 vote for Cote which is nice.
If it is burgers / chips etc that the fussy eater prefers ;) then Hard Rock Cafe is on the quayside and you get the added bonus of eating your dinner next to Sting's underpants and Mark Knopflers old socks etc 😁.. their breakfast is pretty good value too although I guess your hotel will be sorting that out

I'm a bit out of touch with bars and restaurants in town, these days! I didn't know there was a Hard Rock and only heard of 5 Guys when Farage got milkshaked!

Thanks everyone.
Have enjoyed reading menus from your lovely suggestions all afternoon!

We've booked Babucho which I think looks great and will suit all of us and also booked for drinks at Above rooftop bar.

The Christmas market suggestion is perfect and then we can just have a wander around and see the castle and keep.

Will pack a warm coat - thanks for that tip too!

Babucho is lovely and the view from Above is fantastic. Enjoy your visit!
